Malik Willis Is a *Checks Notes* Tennessee Titan

The Tennessee Titans traded up to get their quarterback of the future after all.

I should most definitely not be writing this right now because it’s #GinFriday and I have indeed been in the sauce. But, I just couldn’t resist. I almost tore my ACL jumping off the couch when the Tennessee Titans selected quarterback Malik Willis with the 86th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Forgive me if I commit a typo, but I started drinking after the Roger McCreary pick thinking the Titans wouldn’t be taking anybody sexy tonight (no shade at McCreary, I love the pick). I was wrong – they end up as the team willing to roll the dice on the developmental project that Willis is.

I’m not sure how or why Willis slid as far as he did, and became the third quarterback off the board behind Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder. I mean, hell…this was a guy we thought could guy as high as #2 overall to the Detroit Lions at one point. We knew this wasn’t the most accomplished and established quarterback class, but for only two guys to go in the first 85 picks was a shock. The Titans traded up from #90 to get Willis, and my guess is that the value was just too good to pass up.

Willis is far from a perfect prospect. He has some real head-scratchers on his film, and his technique is far from refined. But, his physical traits are immediately among the elite in the NFL. At 86, it’s a steal to get a guy with his level of potential at the most important position on the field. His arm is explosive. His legs are explosive. If you boil Willis down to one word, it’s “explosive.”

And, in Tennessee, he’ll have the benefit of having time to develop, getting ample time to adjust to the NFL game and work on the mechanics. Do we trust the Titans coaching staff to get the most out of his skill set? I don’t want to talk about that right now. I’m just going to focus on the positive. I hope this post has made at least some sort of sense. You guys can go ahead and start the “Ryan Tannehill hot seat watch.” I’m going to go back to my gin and tonic.
