The SoBros Mailbag #199: Ja Morant and AJ Brown

It's lunch time on a Friday when the Grizzlies can close out the Wolves and the Titans just traded AJ Brown to Philadelphia. The SoBros Mailbag is here.

Let’s face it – every day we are routinely bombarded with questions. When you’re an emerging media company in Nashville, people just want to know what your opinions are on everything. It’s only natural. And, since our duty is to serve the people, well, we have no choice but to be present. That’s the SoBro Way. Also, aren’t mailbags just a barrel of laughs anyway? Welcome to the newest weekly recurring feature up in this bitch: The SoBros Mailbag. As always, hit us with those mailbag questions @SoBrosNetwork on Twitter, email ’em to me anonymously at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com. And, holy shit, I need to update this terrible intro paragraph that I’ve been using literally ever since I started writing this column…

Question, from Tyler on Instagram:

Can you imagine being as athletic as Ja Morant? I can’t.

Answer:

No way. It’s incredible. It’s like watching an artist paint the way he navigates traffic in the paint and contorts his body to go up and make shots. It’s rare athleticism and a level of body control and skill that I don’t think many people truly understand. Appreciate him, Grizz fans. This man is one in a million.

Question:

Answer:

Man, everyone thinking you’re a murderer is a great way to avoid people, and that sounds generally appealing to me. But, it’s still a pretty bad stigma to carry around. I’m going to go with that one – I’m not a picky eater, so people can think I’m vegan and feed me vegan options at their cookouts. I’ll be fine.

Question:

Answer:

Damn, Steven – we’re just going to take the gloves off and go no holds barred on this week’s mailbag, huh? You’re going to start a fight in my small kitchen tonight as soon as Aura gets home from work, aren’t you? Just kidding – she never reads this shit. The answer is easy: Gene Shalit.

Question, also from Tyler, but on Facebook:

What the fuck?

Answer:

I don’t get it, man. I really don’t. It feels like we’re getting a little too far into the minutiae here. The whole “forest for the trees” deal. I feel like maybe the Titans got a little too cute. I can certainly understand the vision and the logic behind the pick – you can’t pay everyone. It’s probably not wise to give $100M to a receiver with an injury history in an offense that’s going to run the ball 40 times a game. Then, you draft a guy that plays a lot like AJ Brown. I mean, you can see the moves and make them make sense.

But, these guys talked about being “better around Ryan Tannehill” all offseason long. Are they better around Ryan Tannehill now? I don’t know. I felt like Brown was -THE- building block of the future for this offense. That’s not a knock on Derrick Henry – just that Brown brought something to the table that the Titans have never had, and we saw how much the passing game struggled without him last season. Plus, Brown has proven NFL production. In him, you’re not rolling the dice on a prospect that hasn’t paid a down of NFL football in his life (I love the Treylon Burks pick, by the way). Brown said he would’ve come back at $22M/year, and I feel like there is absolutely a way for the Titans to have made that work. But, Jon Robinson sets a price and he won’t go above it – now, here we are.

Ultimately, I do feel like the Titans will be alright. Now, they don’t have to worry as much about paying the rest of that 2019 draft class. But, they dug themselves a hole…that’s for sure.

Keep the questions coming – catch y’all next week!
