Okay, so Where Does the MCU Go from Here?

Where do you want to see the MCU head to next?

**SPOILER ALERT** You’ve been warned. We haven’t seen an Avengers-level ensemble since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Understandably so, that film was the culmination of 11 years of storytelling. It was an emotional rollercoaster the magnitude of which I’m not sure we’ve ever seen in cinemas before, spanning over a decade. It makes sense to take a deep breath, reset the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe a bit, slow things down, and allow us to process it all. Kevin Feige and the crew at Marvel Studios have been fostering that change in the MCU since – introducing us to new characters such Shang-Chi and Moon Knight, while telling stories that aren’t quite as sprawling and all-encompassing. Still, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness certainly felt like the closest we got to an Avengers-level story since 2019.

I don’t know about you guys, but I definitely sighed once those credits rolled. It was an epic in a way – a lot of folks are saying a lot of things about this movie, but lost in the shuffle is just how far our heroes traveled to get to where they were going. I loved the horror elements of the film – I don’t know that I would go as far as to say it was “a horror movie,” because it sure felt like it was still a comic book movie to me. But, I get the hype for Sam Raimi and the unique touch he brought to the property. Some of the dialogue was trash, and ultimately, those things keep it from the upper echelon of the MCU in my opinion. Hell, it was a lot of fun to watch, though – and the surprises we did get were impactful. Brandon has a review up on the site you can check out if you want more multiverse reaction.

But, this movie did make me wonder, “well now what?” Maybe that’s a fanboy’s way of thinking – always looking ahead to what’s next, something bigger, and what could be. Marvel has done a fantastic job here recently of spreading our characters out. In a way, it’s keeping things fresh, but also keeping us guessing. My best guess is that this practice is going to continue for a little while. There are still plenty of characters that we haven’t even really caught up with since Endgame – Thor, Wakanda, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man. I’d say once we get through the next Ant-Man flick, we’ll be planting the seeds for our next big adventure.

But, what we’ve accomplished here is firmly establishing the multiverse. We get it. We know how it works now, folks. You did your job. From Endgame and Loki, we’re also starting to understand how time works in the MCU. So, I’d expect both time travel and multiverse jumping to be major themes of the next major Avengers-level storyline. They’re going to continue to lay the framework for how each operates, and we’re going to see our main characters heal as a new cast of characters is introduced. Again, that’s just my best guess here, folks.
