For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a fan of hidden passageways, secret doors, and all manner of shit like this. I don’t really know or understand why – my guess is that they’ve always felt sort of magical and out of the ordinary, and I’ve always wanted something magical and out of the ordinary to happen to me. That’s not meant to be self-deprecating or sad or anything – I’m not saying nothing good or exciting has ever happened to me. I am talking about literal magic, y’all. My dumbass kid self always held out hope that magic was real and that if I just kept believing, one day it would come true. This also explains how I became a professional wrestling fan. Anyway, something about the idea of pulling the right book off the shelf and suddenly finding a hidden pathway to who knows where was always exciting. That’s why I always feel my heart flutter when I see stuff like this circulating on the internet:

I don’t know what kind of Willy Wonka bullshit these people are on, but I am one million percent here for it. First things first – since I’ve been talking about magic, I would have to acknowledge that it does take the magic out of it if you build a slide in your house. You know it’s there, and so it’s not something that’s happening to you…it’s not some revelatory discovery…it’s literally you making it happen. It’s like the same as enlisting the services of a sex worker. It counts, technically, but you took some of the magic out of it with the transaction of cash.
I grew up designing crazy treehouses in sketchbooks, drawing out ways that my parents could’ve added on to their house, even added a secret passageway to it. This is what happens when a generation of kids like me grow up to be adults with money and the resources to turn our stupid dreams into reality.
