All good things must come to an end and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is the beginning of the end. One of the most successful series, if not the most successful series, of the decade has approached its final year and by next July, Harry Potter will be complete. And after seeing Part 1, the final showdown will be worth the wait. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is darker than any Potter movie put together and it is great and exciting.

As Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) get more mature so does the material and that could not be more clear than in this movie. And usually when a film is cut in to parts, the first one suffers because they are saving the good stuff for the finale, and Deathly Hallows: Part 1 does do some of that, but it stays interesting and on a steady pace and what you see in this one only gets you more prepared for Part 2.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione are away from Hogwarts and the protection of their professors. This film takes place in a dark world where Death Eaters rule the land and Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is preparing to take over for good and get rid of Harry Potter once and for all. Harry, Ron and Hermione set on a journey to find the Horcruxes, the keys to Voldemort’s immortality, and destroy them. And during their search, they find out the three objects that make up the Deathly Hallows along with the power and importance they hold.

Director David Yates (who directed Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince) reprises his role and will finish directing the Harry Potter series. And he has done an excellent job capturing the tone of each book and transferring that on-screen. In Deathly Hallows: Part 1, he creates this dark atmosphere that makes the world these characters live in seem scary yet full of eagerness. The opening scene with Voldemort and his gang of Death Eaters sitting around a table sets the mood for the entire movie. It is just a taste of what you are in for.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is surprising and impressive. The subject matter is getting darker and more violent, and this Potter is not the one with the Sorcerer’s Stone or who was in the Chamber of Secrets. We have come a long way since those days. The performances just keep get getting better and Yates is the perfect director to take this series home. He has proved it. Part 1 keeps you involved and captivated, and we will all be rewarded when the ultimate showdown finally approaches. And it is getting closer and closer. But for now enjoy this movie because it is the most terrifying and one of the best ones in the entire series.
