After being extremely disappointed by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, I could not have given less of a shit about Jurassic World: Dominion. But, they don’t listen to the opinions of a dickhead with a website when they’re making these movies, and as long as they’re making their millions, who’s to stop them? Point is, there’s a new installment to the grand pantheon of Jurassic Park lore out, and our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, wanted to talk about it. So, we fired up the mics for a conversation about it on the most recent episode of The Vick’s Flicks Podcast.
In the process, we came away with a pretty conflicted opinion on this movie franchise. What made Jurassic Park great all those years ago was the excitement, and the dinosaurs themselves – the special effects, the frights, but most importantly, the dreadful sense of anticipation you felt at every turn. To this day, I see liquid tremble in a glass and I think about that movie. But, they got away from that very basic appeal in all of the sequels. I thought they might’ve gotten it back with 2015’s Jurassic World, but lo and behold, they pulled the rug right out from under us with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
It’s created this interesting dynamic with this franchise – while Jurassic Park, on its own, stands as one of the most iconic films in American cinematic history, the franchise as a whole leaves a lot to be desired. We talked about that specific element of this thing, concluding that the sequels are bad enough to put Jurassic Park on down the list of film franchises. What do you think?
