The future is now, folks. As artificial intelligence (otherwise known as ‘A.I.’, if you are not into futurism) advances and develops, they are making it do more and more routine human things. Take the story we’re going to break down today as an example – they have robots playing chess against literal children now. As it turns out, this is probably not a good idea because robots have apparently not progressed to the point that they will not break a child’s finger if it performs a move a little earlier than expected.
Courtesy of NewsBeezer (which I’m sure is a 100% credible source of news):
The AI robotic arm grabbed the young player’s index finger and squeezed his finger firmly. The people around the boy immediately rushed to help, but did not prevent the consequences in the form of a broken finger.
Tough scene for this young man. That’s a hell of a way to learn patience. For me, it was “hey you can’t buy that new toy until you earn enough allowance to get it.” For this kid, it was “hey a robot is going to break your finger because you moved before the robot was done moving.” That seems like a major oversight for an industry that prides itself on foresight (which is in layman’s terms, “seeing the future,” I believe). You can’t really claim to be clairvoyant if you can’t see this type of thing coming.
How does this work, though? Do they have to take the robot out back and shoot it now? I would think so. You can’t just let this thing go on living. At the very least, if this robot wants to start acting human, it deserves to get its ass beat like a human. If you’re this kid’s dad, you absolutely have to bow up on this robot, even if it theoretically could literally end you. That’s just the sacrifice you have to make as a parent. You have to be willing to go to war at any given moment against any entity that breaks your kid’s finger.
What would happen, though? That’s what I would want to know, and I think that’s really where this conversation gets interesting. Would the robot eventually get to a point where it would defend itself? The easy answer is ‘no’ because it wouldn’t be programmed to defend itself. But, how can we know for sure? If this thing is supposed to genuinely mimic behavior of a living knowledgeable organism, it’s eventually going to kick into survival mode, right? Terrifying. This could be how we end up awaking sentience in A.I. and leading to the ultimate demise of the human race. We kick an A.I.’s ass for breaking a kid’s finger.
