It’s summertime offseason content time! As the season approaches, I’m going to be taking a look at the landscape of the NFL, position by position, over the course of the next several weeks. We’ll be talking about the who’s who of the NFL in our own little version of the NFL Network’s “Top 100 Players” bit they do every year. Up next, we’re talking about the top 10 NFL tight ends for 2022!

Folks, I know a tight end when I see one! If you know what I mean, I mean! Nah, I’m not being dirty here. I mean..I can appreciate a good tigh…you know what? I’m just going to start over here. We’re talking about the football position, tight end, on this column. And, really – this one is some boring ass shit this year. There are 4-5 pretty well unanimous choices for the top five, and the rest is just a crap shoot. Is the tight end position being devalued in the modern NFL? Some are saying so. Regardless, some of y’all’s tight end lists are so bad that they still have Rob Gronkowski on them -even though- y’all already know he’s a free agent. Come on. Is Gronk really going to be a top 10 tight end by season’s end if he hasn’t played at all? Don’t answer that, actually. I don’t want to eat my words.

The Top 10 NFL Tight Ends for 2022

10. Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers – There’s something about Freiermuth’s game that just has an old school quality to it. This man is a wrestler – he’s going to wrestle the ball away from you and hit you in the mouth. He might not be the elite, athletic route runner that some of these guys are, but I’m saying a guy that’ll hit you in the fucking mouth is still worth something in the NFL today.

9. Mike Gesicki, Miami Dolphins – What is Mike Gesicki doing on this list? This isn’t a list of the top 10 slot receivers in the NFL!

8. Dawson Knox, Buffalo Bills – Knox is starting to gain a little traction as a weapon and a blocker. I’d put him in that category of guys who could have a big breakout season, but he gets point for being on that Bills offense that should be hanging 30 on people every week.

7. Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles – I’m here for the 2022 breakout campaign for Goedert. I know the Eagles throw the ball like twice a game, but Goedert is one of the best all-around balanced tight ends in the game. With more weapons on offense drawing more attention away from him, maybe Goedert can catch both of the two passes Jalen Hurts will throw per game this season.

6. TJ Hockenson, Detroit Lions – Maybe it’s just because I have had Hockenson on my fantasy team in my dynasty league for the last 10 years, but I’m still holding out hope for that breakout season. FFS, who else are the Lions going to throw the ball to?

5. Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens – Ol’ sturdy. Ol’ reliable. Mark Andrews is like a really steady old pickup truck….productive as all get out. The Ravens and Lamar Jackson are damn sure getting their mileage out of Andrews because they have no one else to pass the ball to.

4. Kyle Pitts, Atlanta Falcons – I don’t care that none of his quarterbacks can throw the ball deeper than 15 yards, this man is a pure play-maker, born and bred to electrify on the football field. He certainly looks like he’s poised to become one of the best vertical threats at the tight end position in the entire NFL.

3. Darren Waller, Las Vegas Raiders – The top three in the game are pretty clear (at least to me) right now. Waller is as versatile and athletically dominant as they come. He can absolutely take over a game, and in getting him back healthy, we should see him getting back to the play-maker he was before his injury.

2. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs – Kelce is the savviest route-running tight end in the game. The dude just knows how to get open, and can line up anywhere on the field and go. He is one of the rare game-changers at the tight end position.

1. George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers – I know there are some injury concerns with Kittle, but he’s still the guy to me. This man can take defenders deep and he can put them in the dirt, too. He plays with a lot of heart to go with his talent, and he’s the most well-rounded tight end in the game. I love seeing this dude out there fighting for extra yardage with the ball in his hands. All gas, no brakes.
