CFB Roundup: Did Anyone Make Sure Nebraska Brought Scott Frost Back From Ireland?

From Hawaii to Ireland, college football's "Week 0" was a doozy.

Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.

Yes, I am a complete sicko, writing a roundup blog for Week 0 in the world of college football. I don’t care what you think of me – it feels so damn good to be back. It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

*The Nebraska Cornhuskers are off to another disappointing start, and this may have been the most disappointing start yet. A season removed from being the best three-win team in college football history, they are well on their way to becoming the best no-win team in college football history. The thing that is particularly perplexing about this one is that they were actually up 11 points when Scott Frost elected to go for an onside kick. That’s one I’m sure he’d like to have back, and it just might’ve done him in if he doesn’t drastically turn around the season. The fact that we’re having to say this in AUGUST is not good. I actually wouldn’t have been surprised had they decided to throw him into the ocean on the way back from Ireland. Meanwhile, this is a great start for the Northwestern Wildcats. The offense was a huge question mark heading into the season, but they got there and posted 528 total yards of offense.

*The Vanderbilt Commodores going to Hawaii and posting 63 on the scoreboard felt like a bloodletting. That had to be a huge relief for Clark Lea and company. They started off a little shaky – it looked like maybe nerves or something were getting to them, as Hawaii was able to march down the field and put seven on the board early, but once the ‘Dores settled in, they took Hawaii to the woodshed. Through Week 0, Vanderbilt actually leads the FBS in scoring! How about that? Mike Wright had four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing (just like I called it not to pat my own back or anything). He looked like a legitimate weapon. Will Sheppard looked like a bona fide play maker, though I’ll admit…it helps when the defense makes the bold decision to just not cover people.

I don’t know what the ceiling is for this Vandy team, but there were an awful lot of people that thought they’d lose this game. If you took the over on their win total this season (2.5), this is one they had to win, so if they can beat Elon next week and Northern Illinois, they’re going to hit that over. It has to feel like a tremendous victory for a program just trying to find its footing.

*I mean, good for Bret Bielema and the Illinois Fighting Illini for getting off to a 1-0 start and hammering a halfway decent Wyoming Cowboys squad. I know the next step for this program is to get back to a bowl game, but I just have to say – this is a boring ass football team. I think I’ve already hit my quota for blurbs about Illinois this season….moving on.

*The Florida State Seminoles won 47-7 over Duquesne, but the main takeaway was just how nice it was to see football weather back!

*I know that the UConn Huskies ultimately lost to the Utah State Aggies, but the fact that they jumped up to a 14-0 start, and only ended up losing by 11 has to feel like a win for a program that was one of the historically worst in the game a season ago. Hiring Jim Mora felt like a weird move, but at the very least, he seems like an experienced, stable presence. UConn had a little bit of a run game going, too. As a team, they rushed for 245 yards, including a 190-yard performance from Nathan Carter. I’m sure this will only motivate Utah State as they get ready to play the Alabama Crimson Tide this weekend…

My preseason top 10 looks like:

  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
  3. Ohio State
  4. Utah
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Texas A&M
  7. Baylor
  8. Clemson
  9. NC State
  10. Oregon
