ALL ABOARD! The Roger McCreary Hype Train Is Leaving the Station

Roger McCreary is turning heads at training camp for the Tennessee Titans.

An awful lot of folks were scratching their heads when the Tennessee Titans selected cornerback Roger McCreary out of Auburn early in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. But, I wasn’t one of them! Not me, baby! I’m not one to take victory laps out in public on Al Gore’s internet. But, as a credible journalist, I absolutely am in the business of reporting the facts. And, folks – right now, the facts say that McCreary is having a good camp so far. So, it’s not a victory lap if I’m just reporting on what folks are saying.

I was drinking beer all day at SummerSlam on Saturday, but it felt like every time I refreshed my feed, I saw McCreary’s name…and they weren’t actually talking about beans. It’s amazing. I can’t necessarily say I was surprised, though. I was high on McCreary as a fit for the Titans after seeing him at the Senior Bowl. Here’s what I wrote in my scouting report, when I actually suggested the Titans could’ve taken him in the first round (again, not a victory lap):

While McCreary can allow guys to create space at times, he is an excellent pure man corner that is persistent in mirroring wide receivers, and has shown a propensity for being a pesky shadow throughout their routes. He is an aggressive, steady, lockdown type of guy. He’s tough from a competitive standpoint, and doesn’t shy away from the physicality of the game. He’s also a great tackler – even when he does allow an easy reception, his tackling ability limits YAC potential quickly. He went toe-to-toe in man situations against those vaunted Alabama receivers last year (not to mention the other receivers he’s faced throughout his career, hence the “battle-tested” part of my evaluation). There’s a hell of a PBU from McCreary in the video below during which he runs Metchie down from behind and lays out to smack the ball down. That’s emblematic of both McCreary’s ability and his football character – he’s the type of guy that is going to play with a lot of green on his jersey, and he’s going to aggravate the hell out of a lot of wide receivers.

Again….not a victory lap…but, that seems to be the type of player we’ve seen so far in camp. Of course, you want to temper expectations a bit. It is just training camp after all. But, the guy is starting to generate some real buzz, and could prove to be a factor for this team sooner rather than later. You have Mike Vrabel at the podium saying he “doesn’t make the same mistake twice.” Shane Bowen said that McCreary doesn’t seem like a rookie, that he doesn’t panic in coverage. His stuff working Treylon Burks one-on-one has been appointment gif-age when scrolling Twitter. And, for all of the talk about his short little arms, he must be Inspector Gadget because he’s going “go go Gadget arms” on wide receivers so far.

I’ve been a fan of this guy since I watched him at the Senior Bowl and decided to go down a rabbit hole with his film. I’ve been working on this hype train for months now, and I think it’s about damn time this train leaves the station. All aboard – LFG!
