Heisman Watch: Don’t Sleep on Deuce Vaughn

Deuce Vaughn and Sam Hartman make their Heisman Watch debuts for 2022!

The Heisman Watch takes an interesting turn this week, as there were a ton of “meh” performances and not a whole lot of real “wow” Heisman-worthy performances. So, sifting through them all is a little more difficult. It gets especially tricky when you factor in a guy who entered the season as the Heisman front runner: Bryce Young. His game wasn’t exactly what I’d call prolific, but man, when Alabama needed a clutch play from him, he sprinted 20 yards down the field to keep the Tide’s hopes alive. How do we factor that in? Does Young get the benefit of the doubt based off of one play? Given the context, or the magnitude of the moment if you will, I’d say “at least a little bit.

Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud got off to a bit of a sluggish start against Notre Dame, but we damn sure got the guy we were expecting this season when the Buckeyes took on Arkansas State. Stroud had the chance to pad his stats a bit in this year’s Heisman race, going 16/24 for 351 yards and four touchdowns. Stetson Bennett is an interesting guy in the 2022 Heisman race as well. If Georgia continues to adapt and play offense the way they have against Oregon and Samford, Bennett could be the beneficiary the way they’re slinging it around. He added 300 more passing yards, a passing touchdown, and a rushing touchdown to his resumé on Saturday.

The USC Trojans are rolling right now, and they’ve climbed all the way up to #7 in the AP Poll as a result. Caleb Williams has had a prolific season so far, but Saturday’s game showed just how much of an impact having a guy like Jordan Addison at wide receiver can make. Both guys could end up being Heisman candidates if the Trojans keep lighting up the scoreboard. Addison had seven catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn is one of college football’s best kept secrets. There aren’t too many players that mean as much to his team as Vaughn does to the Wildcats. They absolutely trounced the Missouri Tigers on Saturday, and in the process, Vaughn converted 24 carries into 145 rushing yards and two touchdowns. K-State is 2-0, and it might mean they really need to go on a run for Vaughn to emerge as a legitimate candidate, but for now, let’s at least not keep sleeping on the kid.

I’ll tell ya hwhat – Wake Forest getting Sam Hartman back and healthy makes this offense dangerous in an ACC that looks like it could be anybody’s ball game this season. He put one on Vanderbilt on Saturday, going 18/27 for 300 yards and a whopping four touchdowns. Lastly, I’d mention Hendon Hooker in this week’s Heisman conversation – dude hung 325 passing yards on Pitt with two touchdowns. He’s worthy of the spotlight in his own right.
