CFB Roundup: Feels like ’98

The stakes will be high on Saturday when the Tide and Vols take the field.

Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.

*Guys, I’m ready to buy in on the Tennessee Volunteers. It feels like once this team got over the Pitt hump, they looked around and realized they had a chance to do something truly special. And, that’s exactly where we are with this franchise. These Vols marched right down to Baton Rouge and absolutely ran through the LSU Tigers like a hard dick through hot butter (don’t ask me how I know). Hendon Hooker is looking like a legitimate Heisman candidate, and this defense is way better than any of us gave them credit for prior to the season. This sets the stage for a massive game on Saturday in the ‘Third Saturday in October’ rivalry.

It’s the first time since 1989 that both teams will be undefeated heading into the game. The Alabama Crimson Tide dropped to #3 in the AP Poll after struggling to fend off the Texas A&M Aggies. That was as ugly a win as we’ve seen from Alabama in recent seasons, as Jalen Milroe turned the ball over three damn times. If Alabama continues to play like that, and if the Vols can keep that LSU chemistry going, watch out. Alabama might have to be on upset alert this weekend.

*Do we know any more about the Georgia Bulldogs after they whooped up on the Auburn Tigers? Auburn stinks…was it enough to make us forget about the Kent State and Missouri games? Are we absolutely positive that this should be the #1 team in the country right now? I’ve got something for you guys to chew on – the Ohio State Buckeyes should have that spot.

*I have no idea what the fuck is wrong with the Oklahoma Sooners. I mean….49-0….tough scene. The Sooners find themselves at the absolute rock bottom of the Big 12 standings. Who would’ve thought? That’s right – the West Virginia Mountaineers currently have a better Big 12 record (0-2) than Oklahoma does (0-3). Looking at this schedule, I don’t think bowl eligibility is a given with this program and that feels insane to say.

*Well, the UCLA Bruins are officially here, and it’s time we take notice of them as contenders in the Pac-12. They’re one of the two lone unbeatens left in the conference alongside the USC Trojans, and man…that game could have some high stakes this season. This could be the season we thought last season was going to be for UCLA. Meanwhile, the Utah Utes are officially cooked after getting their second loss of the season.

*I hate the Kentucky Wildcats. My biggest “safest” bet of the week, and that’s the showing you put on? I still don’t think the South Carolina Gamecocks are any good. Even down Will Levis, I expected Kentucky to pound the ball and play defense. I guess it’s not OVER over for Kentucky, but with two losses, any hope they had of sneaking back into the College Football Playoff is gone. And, frankly, there’s no reason to think this team can hang with Georgia or Tennessee right now.

*Who is responsible for this? And, why would you do this?

*So long, Kansas Jayhawks, my sweet prince. It was fun while it lasted.

*I just want to ask Steven McCash point blank – are you willing to say that Mississippi State is good now?

*The Cincinnati Bearcats won 28-24 over the South Florida Bulls as 27.5-point favorites. I maintain that the Bearcats are benefitting from a down year among the Group of Five teams. They’ll probably get that Cotton Bowl bid by default, but if they fuck around and lose one of these games, it’s going to open the door for somebody else. My eyes are on you, James Madison Dukes.

*The game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Illinois Fighting Illini was everything I had hoped it would be. What a fine testament to modern Big Ten West football. Illinois is now ranked in the top 25 for the first time in forever. They’re in the driver’s seat in that division, and man, does it feel weird. Factor in a game they should’ve won against the Indiana Hoosiers, and this could easily be a surprising 6-0 team.

*Are the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets gonna stumble around and get into a bowl game? They’ve upset Pitt and Duke to go 2-0 since firing their head coach. Sitting at 3-3 with games left against Virginia, Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, and Florida State (I’m not giving ’em a chance against Georgia), I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them get one of the bowl slots if they keep playing like this.

My Current Bowl Projections

  • Fiesta Bowl: Georgia vs. Clemson
  • Peach Bowl: Ohio State vs. Tennessee
  • National Championship:  Georgia vs. Ohio State
  • Rose Bowl: Penn State vs. USC
  • Orange Bowl: NC State vs. Ole Miss
  • Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. Oklahoma State
  • Cotton Bowl: Michigan vs. James Madison
