Folks – New York Football Is Back!

The Jets and Giants are a combined 9-3 on the season, just like we all thought they'd be before the season started...

Well folks, we have another nice little football Sunday in the books, and while we learned a lot of things, I think one of the more interesting little nuggets to come out of this week’s action is that football in the Big Apple is all the way back, baby. It’s a good time to be a fan of either New York team. The New York Jets are now 4-2 after upsetting the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The New York Giants upset the Baltimore Ravens to move to 5-1. That’s right – after all these years of putrid football, New York’s NFL teams are a combined 9-3 on the season. Incredible.

Show me a man who predicted Daniel Jones would lead the league in game-winning drives in October, and I will show you a man who is a liar. A bald faced liar. So many of us pointed to the work that Brian Daboll did with Josh Allen in Buffalo and said, “hey – if he can do that with Danny Dimes, he just might turn him into a franchise quarterback after all.” But, we always followed that up with, “well, the success of the 2022 Giants will depend on how quickly Daboll, Jones, and the rest of that Giants offense can jell.” For one, it looks like Jones and Daboll are doing just fine. But, for another, I don’t know that it even really matters. They don’t seem to really need that Bills passing attack to win games!

I mean, this Giants team is pretty damn scrappy. They are beating people up and keeping things tight into the fourth quarter. It’s not all about getting that vertical passing game going like we thought it would be. This is a grimy football team that is hanging around in games, even the one they ended up losing. They’re running the ball effectively as Saquon Barkley is having a career season. Andrew Thomas is showing up as one of the best tackles in all of football. Kayvon Thibodeaux is making an instant impact along the defensive line. And, he’s just a small part of what has been a major improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Meanwhile, Gang Green is having a similar resurgence as a hard-nosed football team.

Sauce Gardner has deflected a pass in every game this season. This man went toe to toe with Aaron Rodgers in Rodgers’ own house and looked like a seasoned vet. And, what does he do to celebrate? He tosses the cheesehead hat thingy on and roams around the stadium. That’s just cold-blooded, folks. Quinnen WIlliams is emerging as a force along the defensive front in his fourth year out of Alabama. Breece Hall is running the ball down peoples’ throats. Dude had 116 yards and a touchdown against the Packers. This is a team that seems to be putting it together and taking on the mindset of its head coach, Robert Saleh.

I don’t know what the ceiling is for each of these teams, but I don’t think that matters to New York sports fans right now. You have to just live in the moment and savor it a little bit, right? I’m not talking about a Subway Series Super Bowl just yet, but I think it’s the character both of these teams have shown, and the style with which they play that make them tough and competitive. They’re going to make their respective playoff races interesting, and anything can happen once you get into the postseason. Look no further than the very Giants I’m talking about today as proof – those runs in 2007 and 2011 took them all the way to Super Bowl victories.
