To me, the best part of Spooky Season is the collection of films and programs that accompany it. So, let’s dig right in – here’s my list of the regulars in my rotation and some new stuff I tried for 2022.

The Regulars

  • Monster House – I feel like I’ve written and talked about Monster House every year on this website. I don’t know if there’s a bigger champion for this movie on the internet. I’ll spare y’all the recap because you’re probably tired of hearing me talk about it. It’s the first movie I watch this time of year.
  • The Wolfman (2010) full review – To me, this is the GOAT of Spooky Season movies. I know that might be a bit of a hot take, but it combines dreary vibes, jump scares, and compelling story that scream ‘quintessential’ Halloween to me.
  • Goosebumps – Fun for the whole family with a vibe that perfectly captures the season, and offers up some nice nostalgia for 30-somethings like me who grew up reading the books.
  • Beetlejuice – It’s a classic. An absolute masterpiece. I can’t wait for the sequel even though it’ll probably suck.
  • Dark Shadows (2012) – Underrated Spooky Season flick that doesn’t get the credit it deserves in this rotation. Brandon and I were talking about this one the other day, and I believe it to be the only post-2007’s Sweeney Todd Tim Burton movie that’s actually worth a shit.
  • Yet to watch regulars that I still want to recommend: Sleepy Hollow, The Haunted Mansion, Scream, Hubie Halloween, The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Hocus Pocus

New in 2022

  • Hocus Pocus 2 – My hot take about this movie: they shouldn’t have made it.
  • Spirit Halloween: The Moviefull review – This thing belongs on Freeform every Halloween. I’ll say it now. It felt like a nice throwback to the old made-for-TV specials of the 90s.
  • Halloween Endsfull review – Oh, they were so close. I loved the premise of this one, and I really liked the vision of what I thought they were going for. But, we take a turn that just completely took me out of the story. I found it boring. I found it pointless. I don’t think I care to ever watch this one again.
  • Werewolf by Night – I loved the simplicity of this Halloween special from Marvel. I loved the introduction of three of the new characters and can’t wait to see how they tie them into the larger MCU. I thought this was a ton of fun – it was a nice homage to the old Universal Monsters movies, had some nice action, some nice thrills, and along with Spirit Halloween, it’s the only new flick from 2022 that I will be adding to the regular rotation in future Spooky Seasons.
  • Rob Zombie’s The Munsters – I would’ve loved this if I watched it on mute.

Trying it out for 2022

  • WolfStoney Sees on Patreon – It’s completely bat shit insane, but I can’t resist Jack Nicholson and James Spader. I just can’t. This one’s an outside-the-box recommendation, but please, try and have some fun with it.
  • The Silence of the Lambs – Yeah, I get it. I get why this won so many awards. This shit rules.
  • Hannibal Drinking With…Hannibal – I don’t understand why people hated this movie so much. As a guy that doesn’t do jump scares very well, this is my kind of Spooky Season flick. Ambient, soggy, and unsettling.
  • Jeepers CreepersDrinking With…Jeepers Creepers – What the fuck?! Why did we think this was the class of horror when we were teenagers?!
  • Joy Ride Drinking With…Joy Ride – I’ll say it…it’s not very “spooky” in the traditional sense of the word, but it’s a nice little change of pace from the heavy rotation, and I was surprised at how well it held up after all these years.
  • The Witches of Eastwick – More Spooky Season Jack Nicholson being completely unhinged. I had no idea what this movie was about when I fired it up and it completely blew my mind in a not so good way.
  • Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – Listen, I won’t tell you guys this is a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but I absolutely loved the book so let me have my fun.
  • Halloween Killsfull review – I thought it got a bad rap. It was bloody, violent, and action-packed. I’ll probably stick with the 1978 original for every Spooky Season moving forward, but I don’t think this was nearly as bad as it was made out to be. Brittany called it “an action movie,” and yeah, that plays pretty well.
