I Randomly Thought of Vernon Davis so Let’s Watch Some Vernon Davis Highlights

Vernon Davis absolutely ruled.

You know that meme where it’s like “dudes will just sit and name old football players and be perfectly entertained” or whatever? That’s so real. There’s a lot of fake shit on the internet these days, but that meme is so fucking true it hurts. I love it when I think of an old football player and get excited about his game all over again. One such player would be former 49ers/Broncos/R-Words tight end Vernon Davis. I randomly thought about him last week when I was driving home Target. I don’t know why, so your guess is as good as mine. But, since I thought about the guy, I figured I’d write about the guy so that you can think about the guy, and then you’ll go watch the highlights. Together, we can all keep the football legacy of Vernon Davis alive.

You’ll have to go watch the highlights on YouTube because the NFL blocks content from showing here on SoBros Network, and I can’t embed the video the way I usually do. That’s fine – I don’t want beef with the NFL. They let me virtually cover the Super Bowl and ask questions at press conferences and shit, so I’m not going to say anything. It’s worth the eight-minute watch and the trip down Memory Lane.

Okay, you watched the highlight video and now you’re back? Cool. Let’s ride. I remember Davis coming out of the University of Maryland back in 2006. That was the first NFL Draft that I really got into beyond a casual eye. It was an era when we were beginning to transition from the old school bruisers and blockers at tight end to the legitimate weapons in a passing attack. Guys like Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez were at their primes back in those days. Offenses were clamoring to find their Gates or their Gonzalez, and Davis looked like he was next in line in that mold. Dude ran a 4.38 40 at that year’s draft.

His career got off to a bit of a tumultuous start. Injuries shortened his first few seasons, and he was the target of Mike Singletary‘s famous “I want winners” speech. I don’t remember if he had his pants on for that one or not. I don’t know if it was the injuries or what, but he never quite lived up to the billing of being drafted 6th overall. That’s only to say that he never got to the Gates/Gonzalez level of tight ends in the NFL, but he was routinely atop that second tier of guys. He eventually got things right and strung together some damn good seasons with Alex Smith. I swear, I don’t even remember his season with the Broncos, but at least he was there to grab a Super Bowl ring. Then, he had a bit of a career resurgence in Washington. All in all, Davis parlayed his talent and skill into a 14-year NFL career.

But, I don’t think he is truly appreciated for his talent level, and I can’t help but wonder what his career would’ve looked like without the injuries earlier on and that light bulb going off sooner. I mean, his acceleration in the open field with the ball in his hands was insane. He had the athleticism to create separation, and I swear the man could just hang in the air in contested catch situations. He has some sick highlights – we should take a moment to appreciate the guy. That’s all I’m saying.

And yeah, this is an accurate glimpse into my creative process – I literally just think something and then I write about it. Boom – media!
