Camerun Peoples Is Making the Most Out of His Senior Bowl Opportunity

Camerun Peoples is shaping up to be a surprise value add for an NFL team out of this year's running back class.

This year’s class of running backs heading into the NFL Draft is a rather deep one. I admit that the name of Appalachian State running back Camerun Peoples wasn’t on my radar before I received word that he’d be attending the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl. But when I saw his name on the roster, I started poking around the internet to learn more about him. The consensus was something along the lines of “size” and “powerful,” but not much of a weapon in the passing game. After a solid practice at the Senior Bowl today, I think Peoples is beginning to put himself on a nice trajectory to rise up big boards this draft season.

He had a solid practice today. I liked him in the protection drills during which the running backs were going one on one with the linebackers. He does look like a natural blocker that can effectively neutralize a threat. His size (6’1″ 215lbs) lends itself to a steady pass protection game, and he had some good reps during that drill. He got some work in on special teams, where he showed he can be an engaged blocker and add value in that facet of the game.

But, it was the potential he showed as a pass catcher that really impressed me today. The way some analysts write about the guy, you’d think he can’t catch the ball at all. But, he got open on a nice play that saw Daiyan Henley drift a little too far back in coverage (not sure if that was by design or not – this may come as a surprise, but they actually don’t tell us media folks what the purpose of each drill they’re running is), and he caught the ball in such an effortless manner that I thought to myself, “wait – y’all mfs said this man can’t catch…

I had the chance to chat with him a little bit after today’s practice, and I asked him if he felt as though his ability in the passing game was something that was being slept on.

It’s easy to see the vision with Peoples – I mean, he’s a stout dude. I get why people are hung up on the physical aspect of his game, because he’s big, he runs with power, and he’s deceptively quick. But, he is seizing the opportunity in Mobile this week to expand upon the aspects of his game that folks are questioning. He looked good in pass protection. He looked good catching the ball. He adds value on special teams. If Peoples continues to show improvement and he continues to develop an all-around game, he’s going to be a tremendous value add for an NFL team, with the potential to be a contributor in the NFL. He’s one of the guys that is using the spotlight of the Senior Bowl to magnify the potential his game has that the tape might not necessarily show. If Peoples is not on your radar by now, it’s time to add him.
