I won’t claim to be the best cook in the world, but I can damn sure follow a recipe, and I’ve found that cooking up a good dinner, enjoying it, and sitting with a cocktail or a cigar afterwards makes for one of the most fulfilling and satisfying feelings in life. So, I make it a habit to seek out new shit to try every year. Allow me to pass along my favorites so that you can give ’em a try in your kitchen some time too!
My Favorite New Recipes from 2022
Sweet n’ sour meatballs – I don’t mind sharing this recipe because it came out of a box of Crockpot liners of all things! So easy, and so good. I love a good meatball dish.

Thyme Cheeseburger Casserole – This one comes to us courtesy of the Fit Men Cook cookbook from Kevin Curry. It’s a fantastic book with a lot of lighter, healthier recipes, but I think this is my favorite I’ve tried so far. It’s in the breakfast section, which may sound counterintuitive to the terms ‘cheeseburger’ and ‘thyme,’ but it hits just right as something that’s outside-the-box on a Sunday morning.
Spiced Apple Chili – Taste of Home – if you’ve been hanging around SoBros Network long enough, then you probably already know that I am a cornball that likes to line up every little thing in-season, and this spiced apple chili recipe was no different. It was the perfect embodiment of fall in a bowl.
Summer Bounty Ratatouille – Taste of Home – We got a Dutch oven for our wedding back in May, so I went a little crazy trying Dutch oven recipes for awhile, and this one took the cake. I ended up making this one four or five times over the course of the summer.
Pomegranate-glazed chicken – I tried this one out of the Good Housekeeping Chicken! cookbook that our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, and his lovely wife gifted us last Christmas. It is a little festive for around the holiday season, so I’ll probably keep it on the December-February menu, but I love the combination of flavors, and the sweet pomegranate overtones throughout it.
Shepherd’s Pie – Tasty – I finally worked up the courage to try a good shepherd’s pie this St. Patrick’s Day, and it turned out perfect, but folks, this is a HEAVY dish.
Buffalo Wild Wings Garlic Parmesan Chicken Pasta – Sparkles to Sprinkles – Fair warning, this may be the most decadent and gut-stuffing recipe I’ve ever tried. My ribs hurt just thinking about how excessive it is. But, it is so easy, and it is SO so good. One bowl and you’re down for the count.
Chicken Fricassee – Martha Stewart – I told y’all I went a little Dutch oven crazy last summer, but this recipe was a downright masterpiece. It’s a work of art the way the flavors combine. Take your time and savor the process with this one. I don’t think I’ve ever felt more accomplished in the kitchen than when I pulled this one off.
Crock pot apple cider glazed root vegetables – Family Style Food – This is as Autumn-y as an autumn recipe can get without pumpkin in it (though I guess you could probably add a bit if you’re feeling inclined to do so). Pro-tip: don’t envision this as a side. Brown a pound of ground Italian sausage and throw it in the Crockpot to cook with everything else and make this dinner. That’s what we did, and we ended up doing it every few weeks throughout the entire season.
Nashville hot chicken chili – This one came out of Trisha Yearwood’s latest cookbook, and it is downright splendid if you’re a fan of that Nashville hot chicken flavor. This recipe calls for a Dutch oven, but I brown some ground chicken and throw all of the ingredients in a Crockpot with some Nashville hot seasoning (my recipe if you’re following along with the SoBros Recipe Book) and cook it on low for six hours. It’s become a staple of our household!
