Shocking Development: Having More Money Makes You Happier

In shocking news, it turns out that if you have more money, you are usually actually pretty happy.

You know who said “money can’t buy you happiness?” Probably one of these ruthless capitalists that exploit thousands of workers to drive excess profits to line their own pockets instead of distributing it to the people who actually do the work. That’s right, motherfuckers. I’m one of those assholes. We’ve been conditioned for the better part of the last century to believe that if we just work really really hard, we can achieve all of our wildest dreams. Yet, when we don’t, we’re told “more money, more problems” along with the aforementioned “money can’t buy you happiness” to make us feel better. Big business treats us like puppets – they want us believing all this shit because it’ll make us work harder, and in turn, it’ll make them richer. OF COURSE having the money to live a comfortable lifestyle is going to have an impact on your mental well-being!

There’s a new study on the block from researchers at Princeton and Penn – if you haven’t heard, those are two good universities…there’s this thing called the ‘Ivy League’ – that suggests that happiness does indeed rise with income. I’d recommend taking the time to read the study because there is some stuff that I won’t go over here, like the parameters of the study, that is quite interesting. But, I mainly just wanted to chime in with some commentary on the general premise here.

Yeah, no shit! I went to the Harvard of the South (Middle Tennessee State University), and I could’ve told you guys that without a research budget. Y’all done went and wasted all that time and money on something that anyone who ever didn’t have a lot of money could’ve told you. Have you ever been craving a cheeseburger but all you had in the pantry was ramen noodles? That’s a bad example because i actually love ramen noodles. Have you ever been craving a cheeseburger but all you had in the pantry was a can of tuna? I mean, I don’t mean to make light of this because this is a prickly kind of article and I realize I’m blurring the line here even more than I usually do – but, a lot of us have at one point in time in our lives wondered where the hell the money for the next bill that’s due is going to come from. That has an impact on how stressed we are!

Of course our financial well-being affects our general well-being. Why are we acting like this is science now? Is this what it takes? We need our biggest and brightest brains publishing research in scholarly journals for stuff that everyone already knows (no disrespect or anything, of course)? More money, more problems? Nah, I think I’ll take those problems vs. having a pipe bust in my house and having no idea where the money to replace it is going to come from. We need more altruistic CEOs on this planet. If you’re fortunate enough to have some cold beer in the fridge, pop one open and be thankful for what you have because not everyone is so fortunate.
