Titans Draft Roundup: The Quarterback Question

It must be April because the Titans Draft Roundup is BACK!

Welcome to the weekly Tennessee Titans draft roundup for the 2022 NFL Draft. Over the course of the next several weeks, I’ll be releasing this column once a week with my very professional journalism opinions. You’ll find everything from rumors to wild speculation to actual analysis (sometimes). Titan up!

*Welcome back for another year of the Titans Draft Roundup here on SoBros Network! I always know that it’s gut check time when I start writing these weekly roundup columns about all of the news and rumors floating around. So, let’s start with the quarterback talk. Reports are beginning to bubble up that the Titans could make a move to #3 in order to take a quarterback. There are a few ways this could be playing out – one, they think the rumors that Houston is going to pass on a quarterback have some weight. Two, they think Carolina and/or Houston could draft Anthony Richardson, meaning either CJ Stroud or Bryce Young would fall to them at #3. Three, they have fallen in love with Richardson themselves and would be perfectly content with any of the top three quarterback options. I’ve come full circle on all three of these guys, so I say “make it happen.” I’d be happy with any of these three – and if the Titans hang on to Ryan Tannehill, it makes for the perfect situation to come sit and get better for a season or two before having to play.

*According to Justin Melo, the Titans have a visit planned with Georgia OT Broderick Jones. Personally, I’m not as high on Jones as everyone else seems to be. His size and attitude make him a prospect with a wealth of potential, but his technique is a little raw. He tends to lurch at times when he’s lost a step to an edge rusher. Savvy pass rushers will be able to pop a shoulder and throw him off balance. He’s got to sort these things out before he can be a safe bet, but the promise is there.

*Speaking of the big hogs, the Titans appear to have absolutely no interest in Peter Skoronski, who is one of the guys I see mocked to the Titans the most often. No meetings. No interviews. Nothing so far. Could they just be trying to mask their scent? I don’t know. I think it’s possible he doesn’t check one of their boxes. They want guys who can do different things because they excel at them…not guys who need to do something different because they don’t project well at their natural position. Those are two different types of versatility, folks.

*Also according to Melo, they’ve got a meeting lined up with Houston WR Tank Dell too. Dell was a ton of fun to watch at Houston, and at the Senior Bowl, but I feel he’s a tad overrated. He’s simply electric in the open field with the ball in his hands, but he had some concerning drops at the Senior Bowl and he struggled to separate against good press man coverage. He looks like a high upside return specialist who might work his way onto the field as a deep threat specialist.

*As far as free agent signings go, we now know that Corey Levin and Aaron Brewer are going to be back. I’m not sure that either are better than John Michael Schmitz, but a competition between the two is likely good enough to effectively end my dreams of JMS suiting up for the Titans. The Titans also signed Trevon Wesco to fill that blocking tight end role. That’s one less need in the draft, where I imagine the focus will be on finding a good overall TE1 candidate.

*Guys you should watch because the Titans have shown an interest in them: Steve Avila, Rashee Rice, Tucker Kraft, Kelee Ringo, Darnell Wright, Josh Downs, Anthony Richardson, Jaelyn Duncan, O’Cyrus Torrence, Emmanuel Forbes, Tyler Scott, Jonathan Mingo, Hendon Hooker, Jacob Copeland, Mark Evans II, Braeden Daniels, DJ Johnson, McClendon Curtis, Quan Martin, Devonnsha Maxwell, Xavier Smith, Ventrell Miller, Trenton Simpson

*My current rooting interest – in other words, what I hope the Titans do come the end of the month:

  1. Quarterback (Richardson, Stroud, or Young)
  2. Paris Johnson Jr.
  3. Jaxson Smith-Njigba
  4. Trade back
  5. Christian Gonzalez

*As it stands, the Titans currently have six picks in the 2023 NFL Draft:

  • 1st round, 11th overall
  • 2nd round, 41st overall
  • 3rd round, 72nd overall
  • 5th round, 147th overall
  • 6th round, 186th overall
  • 7th round, 228th overall
