A few weeks ago, our resident film critic Brandon Vick and I got together to preview Renfield, the new vampire flick in which Nicolas Cage plays a bat shit unhinged Dracula. If you haven’t heard of it, don’t worry – it seems like no one had heard of it based on how it’s performed at the box offense. Even the people who did hear about it seem to wish they didn’t. Anyway, that’s beside the point here this morning.
The point is that for the first time in the five years since we rebooted The Vick’s Flicks Podcast, we took the opportunity to sit down and talk about one of the most iconic figures in cinema history: the vampire. This episode turned into a fun (albeit quick) dive into film history, where we dug up the early portrayals of vampires…the ones that showed vampires as these grotesque, freakish creatures. From there, it evolved into something much sexier than 1920s era Nosferatu.
Decades later, and the vampire evolved into many different sub-genres – vampire action, vampire comedy, vampire romance…you name it, there’s a vampire movie for it. This plays to our societal infatuation with the idea, look, and feel of the vampire…but hey, we can’t just have the same old blood-sucking stories, can we? This one was a ton of fun to *ahem* sink our teeth into. If you haven’t had the chance to catch up on this show, you can check out the full episode of The Vick’s Flicks Podcast below!
