Nashville Reviews: Wedge Pizza and Pub

Stoney Keeley ventures out to the Wedgewood area around Geodis Park for an afternoon at Wedge Pizza and Pub.

June was a rocky month for yours truly. I had a birthday. My wife had a birthday. Our resident film critic Brandon Vick and his wife wanted to do something with us to celebrate both occasions, and yet, when it was time to make plans, I was lying in bed with a fever and covid-like symptoms. So, we had to reschedule, but by the time I was better, we were in New Jersey for the holiday. Weeks passed, but Brandon finally called me one day last week and said, “hey, man – there’s this new pizza place that’s opened up, and it looks like they have darts and pool and shit like that.” Darts? Pizza? Beer? Newly opened so it might not be as crowded as everywhere else in Nashville? Hell yeah!!! Sounds like my kind of place. Of course, Brandon was talking about Wedge Pizza and Pub over in the Wedgewood area, just a stone’s throw away from Geodis Park.

We strolled in at 12:30PM on Sunday to a bar that had two people sitting at it and a couple of tables occupied. As a man who hates crowds, this is my cup of tea. Maybe that’s how I beat the system in Nashville…I just find places that have JUST opened up and frequent them until they get too crowded. I’m not rooting for it to stay uncrowded, by the way. I hope businesses succeed in Nashville – I’m just saying…I hate crowds. And, our waitress told us that the place was a mad house after the Nashville SC game the prior Saturday.

But, what I like about getting to places before the word gets out is that you really get a chance to look it down. I’m sure I looked like a weirdo, roaming around the place, taking in the scenery…vintage furniture, well-crafted pallet structures (that had me thinking “man, could I do something like this at home?”), and a clean, classic alley with well-lit dart boards that have yet to take the beating of a million dart throws. It was a fantastic place to recenter a bit before the hectic nature of the week took hold. For more on Wedge Pizza and Pub, check out their website here.

Ratings

Food: 5.8/10 – A good, solid, above-average effort on the pizza front. Aura and I had the barbecue chicken pizza, and I have to say, adding banana peppers was a nice touch. I love the tang, and the slightest bit of heat, that they provide to the pizza. Nothing was overbearing – perfect amount of sauce, good amount of chicken, and all the banana peppers I could eat because my wife was picking them off of her slices. The garlic parm wings were fantastic too, and cooked about as well as any wing I’ve had in this city. They were nice and crispy on the exterior, but not cooked so long that they were dry on the inside. Very good plate of wings. Brandon and his wife got a pepperoni pizza on cauliflower crust, and they swore by it. It looked good, but I didn’t manage to steal a slice. Nobody looked away long enough for me to sneak one away. I was dying to try their Nashville hot wings, and they’re Nashville hot chicken pizza…but Aura doesn’t do spicy food, so I may have to get some of y’all who like the Nashville hot stuff to rally with me on my next trip down.

Booze: 6.2/10 – Really good selection of draft beers. They weren’t serving up mixed drinks because they didn’t have any liquor just yet, but it is my understanding that that is yet to come. It’s funny – I married a Jersey girl, and one of my favorite things about visiting the northeast is that just about every bar you walk into has Guinness on tap. I haven’t seen that a lot here in Nashville – they have the cans or bottles, but not on draft. Well, I was stoked to see that Wedge had a tap just for that fresh Guinness goodness. That alone is worth at least a point on the grading scale.

Value: 7.4/10 – Two beers, a Coke Zero, 10 wings, and a barbecue chicken pizza came out to $48, tip included. Where the hell else around Nashville can you eat and drink like that? There aren’t too many places out here in Mount Juliet that I can get that amount of food and beer for that price. Maybe it was just the Sunday matinee – I didn’t even look to see if it was happy hour or anything like that – but I told Aura, “my cheap ass could hang here.

Atmosphere: 8/10 – It was undoubtedly the highlight of visiting Wedge – first of all, I love that you have to drive around the building and park behind it just to even see this place. It felt tucked away, hidden in plain sight, away from all the madness of downtown. But inside, it was comfortable, nice, as people started to filter in for gatherings after us, it took on a sort of communal vibe…kindred spirits delighted in one another’s company. I could easily see this place developing the character of a favorite neighborhood bar. Brandon and I played a few games of darts at a leisurely pace, and while I was not slamming beers, I could easily see it as the type of place that I could sit and pound ’em before calling up a Lyft to get me home safely.

Overall: 6.85/10 – If you’re like me and don’t like crowds but want to try this spot out, I’d recommend doing so as soon as possible. Once the word gets out about this place, I imagine it’ll be a lot harder to find an open lounge chair to sit in. I loved all of the things that Wedge has to do inside the pub, and it was a great spot to share a conversation with friends. But, for me, it was the pizza, the wings, and damn it…Guinness ON DRAFT that really stole the show.
