Good day to you all, SoBros Network Patreon subscribers. Welcome to the SoBros Book Club, on which I will share some book recommendations for those of you who enjoy taking in the written word. Today, we’re discussing Wildly Into the Dark: Typewriter Poems from Tyler Knott Gregson.
I’m a big time poetry fan as you guys know, and I’m a big fan of good old fashioned photojournalism. So, when I found Wildly Into the Dark in the bargain section at Books-A-Million, I was intrigued by the concept. Tumblr poems written out on a typewriter, mixed in with the occasional photo of a big sweeping sunset. Sounds good to me. And, it was only $2? Even better. Let’s go.
The most intimate and eclectic poetry collection yet from bestselling author and online sensation Tyler Knott Gregson
With loyal fans around the world and across the internet, Tyler Knott Gregson is reinventing poetry for a new generation, using Instagram and Tumblr to reach readers where they are.
Tyler’s third collection includes more of his popular Typewriter Series poems (featured in his first book, Chasers of the Light) as well as never-before-published scenes that paint the world as only Tyler sees and experiences it. Filled with vivid photographs and even more vivid emotions, Wildly Into the Dark is a must-have for longtime fans as well as newcomers to Tyler’s unique brand of passionate, intimate, and playful words and images.
I’ll be honest with you guys. Let’s establish two things up front about this one. One, Gregson is a great writer that conveys the depths of his emotions very clearly. Two, I couldn’t even finish this book because it is just too much for me.
I can appreciate a good love poem. I found one that I thought was so good, I dog-eared the page so I could find it whenever we want to. But, my guys…I gotta have a little variety in there. At a certain point, I got halfway through the book and felt like I was reading the same poem over and over and over. If that is your thing, go for it – there’s plenty of beautiful, emotional, dare I say sappy poems in this book.
Maybe I’m just too jaded, but every once in awhile, I just want to read a poem about how much something sucks. Not everything has to be about my undying dedication to my wife. I want to read some weird shit. I want to read some exciting shit. I want to read some hateful shit.
Gregson has found his lane, and he does it extremely well. If you want a love poem, they’re coming aplenty in Wildly Into the Dark. If you want anything else, you’re shit out of luck. It’s hard for me to give it a negative review because I do think Gregson is really good at what he does. It’s just not for me unless I’m in a certain headspace.
