Lost in the shuffle of the late summer box office is a gross little comedy flick named Strays. On the latest episode of The Vick’s Flicks Podcast, our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, and I dove into this movie, how it surprised both of us, and why it flew so under the radar.
There’s an interesting conversation to have about this movie and its spot on the release calendar. At 37 years old, maybe I am just Will Ferrell’s target demographic and I’m still overvaluing the run he had in the 2000s. Maybe kids these days just don’t give a shit about Will Ferrell’s comedy. Maybe people don’t go to theaters to see comedies anymore! I know the strike certainly didn’t help in promoting this movie, but still…it felt like there was absolutely no buzz on social media whatsoever for this movie. So, what gives? Studio just not believe in it? Not see it worth marketing? That’s something that Brandon and I get into before we actually talk about the movie.
For me, it’s worth seeing. I mean, it was a surprising 3/5 in my book. If you’re a fan of Will Ferrell’s brand of comedic delivery, if you just like gross sophomoric humor, if you have a pet of your own, or some combination of all three, this is a good movie for you. They even managed to sprinkle a few heartfelt moments that will resonate with animal lovers in between all the shitting and humping. Jamie Foxx is the real heavy hitter in this one, though. Randall Park and Isla Fisher are hilarious in supporting roles. Will Forte is Will Forte (and that’s good, just to be clear). If you like this style of humor, Strays is a movie that doesn’t just put the funniest one-liners in the previews. It keeps the laughs, as raunchy as they may be, rolling throughout.
