Hell yeah, y’all – Tennessee Titans is BACK! It’s been a long offseason, but we’re finally here. August 11th, the eve of preseason game one. If you stand outside, ignore the relentless humidity, and focus on what breeze blows through, you can almost feel the onset of fall. We’re not too far away at least. Of course, this means that it’s time for me to get back on the preview wagon and talk about an actual game. So, here I am, heart laid bare, sharing some things that I’m going to be looking for in tomorrow’s game at high noon.
The offensive line – If you’ve followed my work for long enough, you already know I’m a big fan of the big meaty men slappin’ meat. I feel like the starting unit is going to get some run in this game as they want these guys to jell before the season starts. To me, it was the biggest weakness on the team heading into the offseason, so let’s see what we got. It’s put up or shut up time. I’m eager to see Big Meat Pete in his first NFL action too.
Levis vs. Willis – The QB2 battle is obviously going to be interesting. Let’s hope this preseason is the only time we see these guys, and savor the moment! I’ll be looking for more body language stuff than anything else – who can confidently command the offense? If it were up to me, I’d switch things up so both guys get a drive or two against the twos, and a drive or two against the threes.
The WR5-WR7 race – I know a lot of media folks are firmly entrenched in the opinion that NWI is making this team, but I’m not ready to come off my hill that he might be a surprise cut this season. The Titans are deeper at wide receiver than I think the fan base is even giving them credit for – it’s a crowded room with guys that bring their own skill sets to the table. So, I’m stoked to see what the time share looks like and who is able to make the most of the opportunity. It could be any of these guys.
The pass rush – I love Arden Key. I love Harold Landry. I love Rashad Weaver as the third guy, but they need a fourth guy to emerge. Sam O? Caleb Murphy? Thomas Rush? Who’s it going to be?
The young secondary – the Titans brought in a whole crop of undrafted defensive backs. Given the number of guys they’ve had to play back there the last couple of seasons, it’s not unreasonable to think that some of these guys are going to play snaps this season. I’ll say it again – let’s see what we got.
