Steven McCash takes us through movies that are turning 21 years old by reviewing them and reflecting upon their impact on pop culture. Pour up a drink related to the movie we’re discussing and enjoy Drinking With…
If you were there in the summer of 2002, then you know just how big the release of Spider-Man was. It was truly a pop culture event. For a 16-year-old Stoney, it was apart of the fabric of my adolescence. There were action figures, video games, a killer soundtrack featuring the lead singers of Nickelback and Saliva belting out a classic, and of course, those damn Spider-Man gummies. I can feel the diabetes entering my veins. That opening weekend was something else, too – theaters were crowded. For me, it was the classic era of “my parents can take us if your parents can pick us up.” Fond, fond memories.
That’s why this massive blockbuster was such a logical choice for this podcast. I was apprehensive to revisit this movie. Comic book movies have evolved so much since 21 years ago, and while I remember this as an enthralling comic book adaptation, you just never know with this podcast! Sometimes, we’ll fire up a movie, and it hits just as well as it did back then. Other times, I can’t help but wonder what the hell I was thinking. Pour up a Spider-Man cocktail, as instructed by McCash, and sit down for an hour and 11 minutes to relive this movie with McCash, our resident film critic Brandon Vick, and me.
