It’s been a wild couple of weeks here around SoBros Network HQ, and if you’re a regular reader of the Heisman Watch, then you might’ve noticed that I haven’t posted a column in a couple of weeks. That’s because we’ve been working to build out a new SoBros Network dot com, and in the meantime, I didn’t want to post articles and risk losing them in the transfer. Rest assured, I kept my top five values each week and have them included in the season totals. So, we’re back, and we’re breaking down Week 7 of the college football season – I can’t believe it. Half of the season has already gone by.
The top 10 matchup between Washington and Oregon was everything we thought it was going to be. I don’t usually put losers in the Heisman Watch, but this week, in an otherwise slow Heisman Watch, I say both quarterbacks are deserving of a spot here. Bo Nix was 33/44 for 337 yards and two touchdowns. He has played well all season. Michael Penix Jr., who many consider the Heisman frontrunner now, was simply electric. In the clutch moments of the game, he delivered some gutsy throws on the money. His precision down the field continues to amaze me. His final stat line read 22/37 for 302 yards, four touchdowns, and a pick. If you ask me, these two quarterbacks are duking it out for the Heisman at this point.
The AP putting Ohio State ahead of Penn State in the Top 25 poll given the way those two teams have played this season feels wrong. They’ll be able to sort that out on Saturday. But, much like the national media seems to be sleeping on how good this Penn State team is, Heisman oddsmakers are sleeping on how good Drew Allar has been. Sure, it was against UMass…but I’m giving him some love this week for the numbers (16/23 for 162 yards, three passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown), and the overall season he’s having. Likewise, Alabama is pushing all of the right buttons with Jalen Milroe. The Crimson Tide is content to play grimy games, muddy things up, and run the ball. But, when bodies come up to defend the run, a well-timed deep shot from Milroe gives the offense a spark. They aren’t asking him to do too much, and it’s suiting his skill set well. He was good against Arkansas on Saturday, going 10/21 for 238 yards, two touchdowns, with a score on the ground to boot.
Finally, we have to give a shout out to Stanford wide receiver Eric Ayomanor for posting 13 catches for a whopping 294 yards and three receiving touchdowns in that miraculous comeback from down 29-0 vs. Colorado on Friday night.
