Man, it has really been a solid couple of weeks for Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who now has 553 yards and five touchdowns in his last four games. At this point, I’m ready to say that Harrison definitely warrants more serious discussion in this year’s Heisman race. Not only is he a likely top five pick in next spring’s NFL Draft, but he’s a real difference-maker in this Buckeyes offense with the potential to take over any game. Against a scrappy Wisconsin defense on Saturday, Harrison posted 123 yards and two touchdowns. His 889 yards are currently sixth in the FBS.
After a strong start to 2023, Jordan Travis had somewhat cooled off for a stretch. But, a game against a middling Wake Forest squad gave him the chance to post some serious stats and maybe get back in this year’s wide open race. He hung 359 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown on the Demon Deacons.
Meanwhile, it was business as usual for the two Pac-12 quarterbacks who I would consider the two favorites for the award. Michael Penix Jr. was 21/38 for 369 yards, four touchdowns, and a pick in a 42-33 win over Stanford. Penix leads the FBS in passing yards with 2,945, and his 24 passing touchdowns are second only to Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams‘ 25. More impressive was what Bo Nix did on the road in one of the most hostile environments in college football. In a 35-6 drumming of a Utah team that had hopes of a Pac-12 title, Nix was 24/31 for 248 yards and two touchdowns with a score on the ground to go with it.
Finally, the Louisville Cardinals just might’ve put Duke out of the ACC race for good on Saturday night with a punishing run game led by Jawhar Jordan. They were able to ground and pound their way to a 23-0 win. Jordan has had a couple of performances like this this season, and while Louisville might be too far out of the Heisman voting periphery, I wonder if Jordan has what it takes to go on a bit of a dark horse run here to get into the conversation. After all, this race is still wide open as I see it. Jordan posted 163 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday night, bringing his season totals to 824 (13th in the FBS) and 10 (9th in the FBS). Maybe it’s time we start waking up to what Jordan and the Louisville Cardinals are doing this season.
