Yesterday was a busy day in the life of a football writer. I could hardly contain myself. I felt like I was struck by a bolt of lightning and instead of killing me, it gave me super powers. I could’ve run a 4.5 40, I’m sure. Anyway, the Tennessee Titans were active with three key signings on the day, and I was happy to hop on the line with Zach to talk about all the action on A Football Show.
Up first, they added running back Tony Pollard, who should serve as a nice complementary piece to Tyjae Spears in a time share. I was surprised by the signing because I didn’t think the team would invest that heavily in the position, but it goes to show the importance Brian Callahan places on the run game despite everyone seeing “Bengals” and thinking “500 yard passing games.” Pollard looked like a different running back down the stretch in 2023 as he continued to recover from a leg injury. The bottom line is this team needed flat out weapons, and they signed a flat out weapon. Pollard can do it all, and the Titans won’t have to worry about tipping their hand on offense based on the personnel alone.
That signing was gravy, but the real beef was the team adding center Lloyd Cushenberry to a massive deal. Call it Mike Will Made It because we’re on that good Cush and alcohol. Cushenberry was one of the better centers in the league after coming into his own with the Broncos. It shows that right off the bat this team is dedicated to beefing up what was one of the weakest units in the entire NFL. It’s an immediate upgrade at the position, and alleviates a need for the draft. Also, the team hadn’t signed Chidobe Awuzie yet, but Zach and I were both pretty confident that a deal was going to be done, so I throw in that eval too. This episode was just one big barrel of laughs and thoughtful football analysis alike.
