Do the Titans...Like...Actually Have a Good Receiving Corps Now?

The Tennessee Titans made news yesterday when they signed former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd to a one-year deal worth $4.5M. In his eight seasons in the NFL, Boyd has amassed 6,000 receiving yards and has scored 31 touchdowns…a pretty solid mark for a career complementary receiver that has carved out a nice little role in the NFL. He’s coming off a 2023 campaign that yielded 667 yards and two touchdowns. Maybe his prime is indeed behind him, but this is still a guy that can certainly be productive as a tertiary option in an offense. He’ll reunite with Brian Callahan, who coached him in Cincinnati, so that added element of familiarity will surely help his cause. But, the biggest thing for me is just how much this beefs up the Titans receiving corps even further. No one put that into context better than the legendary Mike Herndon.

It really does feel like we’ve gone from “NWI WR2” to “is NWI even going to make this roster?” in one single offseason. I kid, I kid. Keep your pitchforks in the tool shed, NWI truthers. I actually love that this move likely moves NWI down the depth chart because, to me, he’s perfectly cast as a WR5. This dude’s about as steady as they come at that spot. I think it might be game over for the intriguing UDFAs from a year ago in Kearis Jackson and Tre’Shaun Harrison. It probably means we’ll be spared another offseason of unwarranted Mason Kinsey hype. I’m curious as to where this staff sees Colton Dowell, but I imagine he’s not going to beat out the guys above him. Philips just doesn’t stay healthy enough, and I think Jha’Quan Jackson being a draft pick means Philips may be one of the odd men out. I don’t know – it’s going to be super interesting to watch this group sort itself out over the summer.

My biggest question mark resides with Treylon Burks. I’m still not ready to abandon all hope that he can eventually turn this thing around. He has plenty of natural talent. Maybe if he’s slotted in at WR4, and he’s more of a gadgety move guy, he’ll have a clearer path to success in the NFL. But, the most important realization about this whole thing is that this group certainly looks like a formidable NFL receiving corps. I can’t remember a time when this unit looked this good on paper. The effort to surround Will Levis with plenty of toys to play with is clear. While the haters will call this group old, I think it’s important to have savvy guys with experience as this team continues to evaluate whether or not Levis truly is the guy moving forward.
