It’s been raining like hell here in the Nashville area for the last month. I don’t remember too many Mays that were as wet as this one. Maybe that’s more about my memory than reality, but I say that to say this: it got me thinkin’ about movies that are great for a rainy day. We’ve had plenty of ’em, and my mind floated in that direction because one of my favorite activities on a rainy day is to just sit and enjoy the beauty of film. I also recently watched A Rainy Day in New York for the first time, so my brain is just doubling down on movies and rain. I presented the topic to the SoBros team, and this is what we came up with – well…this is what we came up with before someone brought up The Flash, which always happens in our movie conversations in the group chat…
The Best Movies for a Rainy Day
I have eight(ish) films that come to mind right away. If I ever have a free evening in the summer time and the clouds start rolling in, these are the ones that I immediately start seeking out on streaming platforms:
- Twilight – Any of ’em. Doesn’t matter. They’re all great rainy day movies. Maybe it’s the moody vampires, emotional werewolves, and all the rain of the Pacific Northwest. I don’t know, but every summer, I stash these flicks away for a rainy day.
- Sin City – Love a good black and white flick to add to the dim vibes of a stormy day. Sin City is laced with rainy scenes and a story that is damn near just as bleak as the weather outside.
- Harry Potter – Any of ’em. Transport me to a faraway place and give me a little bit of magic if I’m going to be in and on the couch all day.
- The Goonies – I don’t know how to explain it, but watching The Goonies on a rainy day is the equivalent of building pillow forts inside when it was too rainy to play outside as a kid.
- Midnight in Paris – Beautiful rain scenes, Woody Allen’s pretentious dialogue, and a bit of whimsy? It’s one of my favorite movies in general, but it does hit particularly hard during a downpour.
- Road to Perdition – Okay, maybe it’s just because of the iconic rain scene in this film, but it was one of the first things to pop into my head.
- The Hateful Eight – I watch it every year when it snows, and doesn’t snow technically count as frozen rain? I’m not sure of the legal rules here. But, if snow clears, we’re definitely adding The Hateful Eight to the mix.
- Lost In Translation – I mean, it’s practically ASMR given the witty dialogue and the stylistic, scenic cinematography. Just imagine the gentle wrapping of rain at your window laid over top of the witty Bill Murray banter. My goodness, get me a blanket! I’m cozy!
Here’s how the conversation went between the SoBros team in our Slack group when I said Twilight was number one:
- Brittany: “I’ll add The Crow, Sleepy Hollow, Jurassic Park, The Lighthouse”
- Sean: “The Crow 100%”
- Brittany: “Ooo The Fog too. Sin City.”
- Owen: The Princess Bride
- Sean: Mandy
- McCash: Sleepless in Seattle
- Owen: The Breakfast Club
- Rooster: “10 Things I Hate About You, but then I’m also gonna throw in a weird one: Return to Oz”
- Sean: “God, I love 10 Things I Hate about You so much”
- Brittany: “Same. 5/5 movie.”
- McCash: “Dirty Dancing is my rainy day and sick day go-to.”
- Zach: “Ya know, I don’t think I have a rainy day movie playlist. We are more of a cyclical/holiday movie vibe household. Though we just did a binge of the Mission: Impossible movies way ahead of schedule. If I had a rainy day movie it would be The Flash, because it’d have to be a downpour in hell for me to watch that shit again.”
- Owen: “I’d have to hit 4 out of 5 bars to see The Flash again.”
- Zach: “I’d have to get hit with metal bars from 5 people to make my buckle to the pressure of watching a CGI baby getting saved from a microwave.”
Lovely – just lovely. 20 movies to get you through your next rainy day! How about that?!?! If you have a go-to favorite film for a rainy day, let us know in the comments!
