In case you haven’t noticed, we talk about movies an awful lot around these parts. In fact, I dare say we have more movie content on the site than anything other than football. During the early onset of the covid-19 pandemic, back when the streets were bare, and things were really locked down, the team got together and came up with a list of a bunch of random movies that you should take the opportunity to see if you hadn’t already. It was a way to add some entertainment to your quarantine, and we had a lot of fun that was much-needed at the time. I was thinking about doing this again some time soon – not sure why the idea popped back into my head, but I figured it’d be a fun bit to launch here on SoBros Network…just completely random movies that we love. Also, I have no idea where you can actually stream/watch these. That’s on you – otherwise, this would be one of those “what’s on Netflix this week” kind of articles…
Random Movie Journal, Vol. 5
American Fiction (2023) – This film got plenty of love last awards season, and though it was playing at a couple of festivals nearby, it slipped through the cracks for me. I finally caught it on one of the streaming services recently and immediately understood why it got the love that it did. Jeffery Wright delivered a heavy-hitting performance, but I thought Sterling K. Brown stole every scene he was in. It’s a wittily written film chock full of good acting. One of my favorites I’ve seen this year.
A Rainy Day in New York (2019) – Maybe it’s because I’m not too deep into Woody Allen’s filmography, but I didn’t get the criticism of this film. I saw several critics say this was like a caricature of a Woody Allen film – like he was phoning it in using recycled tropes, theme, and dialogue from his better efforts. But, I liked this one. The vibes are quite pretentious, I’ll give y’all that. But, I like films that play like poetry.
Baby Driver (2017) – What a cool movie. I mean, the true sense of the word. Y’all ever seen a flick and just thought, “that shit was COOL?” That’s what this was – a shot of adrenaline with a kickass soundtrack and a fun little layered story to go with it.
Red Rocket (2021) – This was another one that got a little awards buzz the year it came out that I never caught. Simon Rex parlayed this shit into an Oscar nomination. I get it. It was a fantastic performance in a deeply creepy movie. Not the horror way. Don’t get it twisted. More in the “washed up porn star hits on a teenager” creepy. The ending completely undid all the good work Rex put in for me.
Wild Things (1998) – This movie has cult status for men of a certain age. Let’s not beat around the bush – if you were a teenager in the late 90s, you absolutely remember the threesome scene. Personally, I think there’s an entire generation of dudes who think this movie is good because of that. It’s not. It’s awful…one of the worst I’ve seen this year. The plot is off the rails. The acting is cheesy. There are plenty of weird cinematography choices. The only redeemable quality it has (besides bare ass naked people) is Bill Murray being Bill Murray.
