There’s two types of people when it comes to weekends. There are those who use the weekend to let their hair down and let out all of their frustrations from the work week and then there are those that use the weekend to relax and knock out what ever is left on their to-do list that they were not able to check off during the week. I personally fall into the second category.
I like to use my Sundays as my ‘let’s check shit off my to-do list’ day especially during this time of year before the NFL season kicks in. I like to plan a nice little Sunday with a trip to Home Depot, Ikea, and Target. Maybe Bed, Bath & Beyond, I don’t know. I don’t always know if I’ll have enough time.
This Sunday was designed to be like any other Sunday but I made the grave mistake of just laying in bed when I woke up and proceeded to grab my phone and scroll through Tik Tok for what seemed like forever. About 37 minutes into my blacking out on the app, one of my favorite content creators popped up with a recommendation. Horror movie reviewer @horror_chronicles recently posted about a new horror film on YouTube of all places that has blown her mind and whenever Syd, who is the person behind the account, posts a video with a recommendation, I pay close attention as we share some very similar taste in the horror genre.
On August 9 with absolutely no fanfare or marketing an extremely low-budget found footage horror film clocking in at one hour called Milk and Serial dropped from the heavens or raised from the ashes depending on your perspective on the video sharing site YouTube. The premise behind the film is that a group of friends who have a very successful channel creating and pulling off pranks on themselves and others are looking to pull off the ultimate surprise on the birthday boy who is affectionately called Milk. Once the prank goes terribly wrong Milk and his best friend and roommate Seven must face the reality of the terrifying aftermath.
The creative mind behind this unbelievably fresh and creative take on the horror sub-genre of found footage is Curry Baker of the very real and equally successful YouTube sketch comedy channel That’s a Bad Idea. Baker wrote, directed, edited, scored, produced, shot, and starred in the film is destined to be a lot of people’s Best Of… lists at the end of the year and may be thought by many to be one of the best found footage films of the last 10-15 years.
Baker along with his That’s a Bad Idea partner Cooper Tomlinson play Milk and Seven respectively along with a small cast made up of other actors seen form some of their video shorts. The chemistry of the duo is on display from the jump and helps keep the audience pinned to their seat as the tension in the film begins to grow. The cuts from present time to just a few hours and days past quickly educates the audience that you are not on the ride you thought you were on but it is too late to get off and to please keep all extremities inside the ride at all times.
Milk and Serial delivers at every turn behind a well written, natural-feeling script that is brought to life by the two stellar leads alongside a supporting cast whose roles are very important to telling and moving the story along. Baker who is best known for his comedic work on the channel has shown that he has the chops to create compelling, original horror along the lines that both Jordan Peele and Mark Duplass have done in recent years with Peele’s Get Out and Duplass’ Creep.
Milk and Serial sits at 134,000 views on YouTube as of this writing and desperately deserves to find its audience, so if you love found footage horror and find yourself with an hour to kill than do yourself a favor and enjoy what is destined to be one of the better received horror films of 2024.
