What the fuck are we supposed to do after THAT weekend of college football? I don’t think I know. A chaotic week on the field leads us to a chaotic week on the Heisman Watch.
Heisman Watch: Week 6, 2024
5. RB Tahj Brooks, Texas Tech – Don’t look now, but the Red Raiders are 5-1 playing some great football right now. They’re also 3-0 in the Big 12 right now. Specifically, their running back Tahj Brooks was prolific against the electric Arizona Wildcats on Saturday. Brooks put the game on ice with a 32-yard touchdown run, bringing his totals 128 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.
4. QB Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt – I mean, come on…if you pull off one of the greatest upsets in college football history, you get a spot in the Heisman Watch. You may not realize it, but the Commodores are pretty damn close to being undefeated. This team is playing with a ton of heart, led by their prolific dual threat quarterback, and scoring some points. The team undoubtedly fed off of his energy as they took down Alabama on Saturday. Pavia was 16/20 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, with an additional 56 yards on the ground. Who knows how far this feisty upstart Vanderbilt team can go?
3. QB Will Howard, Ohio State – The Buckeyes have been the quietest 5-0 in the country. All the chaos in the world around them, but they’re just keeping their heads down and taking care of business. Howard was considered among the Heisman favorites prior to the season starting, but he’s yet to show up in the race during the season. That changes after dominating a good Iowa defense on Saturday. Howard was 21/25 for 209 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. He also had 28 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown as the Buckeyes rolled the Hawkeyes, 35-7.
2. QB Cam Ward, Miami – I don’t know how he keeps getting away with it, but he damn sure does. He may be college football’s Houdini this season. When I went to bed Saturday night, Cal was up 35-10 in the third quarter. I swore it was over. I was wrong. Ward went on to lead four straight touchdown drives to rally and beat the Golden Bears on their own turf. I guess it’s never really over when you have a Cam Ward at the helm of your offense. Ward was 35/53 for 437 yards, two touchdowns and a pick, with another score on the ground.
1. RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State – Just dominant. I mean, he’s just dominant. There’s no other word for it. He’s the best running back in college football and the stats show it. Another week, another long touchdown run – this time, it was a 75-yarder. Jeanty finished the game with 186 yards and three more rushing touchdowns. The kicker is he did it on just 13 carries – that makes 14.3 yards per carry…a first down every time he touched the ball. The Broncos have played five games and Jeanty has already hit 1,031 yards and 16 touchdowns. Like I said…dominant.
