I know we usually dig way back into the annals of film history for The Movie Review Rewind Podcast, but when I thought about how I wanted to start Spooky Season on the show, I wanted to do something a little outside-the-box. I certainly don’t think 2019’s The Lighthouse is something that qualifies as “in the box,” and it’s one that I watch every October. Preferably, if I can find myself on a cooler night, I’ll open up the windows and let the wind blow through the house. Like all of Robert Eggers’ films, atmosphere is a key component in this one. His research is meticulous and he seems to always get the most out of his actors. There’s so much meat on the bone when you think about dissecting this particular film that it naturally lends itself to a deep conversation. That’s why I was ecstatic that our good friend and EIC at 615 Film, Sean Atkins, was kind enough to join me for this show as we really got into the weeds on all of the things that make The Lighthouse so memorable.
