This piece was born out of checking my inbox and noticing an email from the Nashville Scene promoting their “The Late-Night Issue,” promoting the best spots to grab a bite to eat, to karaoke, to dance, etc. For some reason, it just reminded me of those feelings, stumbling around the city nosing around for something to eat after a good night out. Late Night in Nashville
Heading to Dino’s
Maybe it was Five Points
It’s a little fuzzy, but I’m hungry
And it really doesn’t matter
The night’s winding down
As the echoes of Broadway grow faint
A neon glow brightens the sky in the rearview
I feel the adrenaline wearing off heading east
We stand in the street throwing crotch chops

We laugh to ourselves and in that moment
We are kings
Brandon decides to super kick me
We’ve been talking about wrestling too much
Luckily I see it coming and I step back
He whiffs and I lock in a full nelson
He says he won’t do it again and I let go
He grabs his neck and sells it like a pro
No one thinks this is cool – absolutely no one
But we think it’s cool – we are kings
The sidewalk is empty
A stray car drives by here and there
We pass a bar every dozen feet or so
Where the nightcaps are happening
Cologne replaced with sweat
A juicy burger dripping down my shirt
Who cares? The hay’s in the barn
The night is done
A quiet camaraderie in the bar
Someone plays Toto on the jukebox
I’m happy…restful…and grateful
