Let’s face it – every day we are routinely bombarded with questions. When you’re an emerging media company in Nashville, people just want to know what your opinions are on everything. It’s only natural. And, since our duty is to serve the people, well, we have no choice but to be present. That’s the SoBro Way. Also, aren’t mailbags just a barrel of laughs anyway? Welcome to the newest weekly recurring feature up in this bitch: The SoBros Mailbag. As always, hit us with those mailbag questions @SoBrosNetwork on Twitter, email ’em to me anonymously at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com. And, holy shit, I need to update this terrible intro paragraph that I’ve been using literally ever since I started writing this column…
Question:
1 question, that beautiful feline, what is his or her name?
— Kiki (@kittycatj0nes) October 10, 2024
Answer:
Thank you for asking, Kiki. That is my sidekick, Bucky. He’s not an overly affectionate cat – he’ll pull his head away from you if he doesn’t want to be touched, but he still has to be in the same room with his family (his herd, if you will) at all times. He shows affection through slow blinking, and occasionally he will come and ask for one single pet on top of his head.
He was born a feral barn cat. His mother had him in a barrel on the back porch out at my mother’s house. My wife and I agreed to take him in, and he’s been the king of the castle ever since. I’ve had a lot of cats in my lifetime, none of which have been as happy as he is. He’s an awesome companion, even if the vet does say he needs to lose some weight.
Question:
How should Vanderbilt’s win over Alabama be remembered in history?
— Ed Helinski 🇺🇸🇵🇱 (@MrEd315) October 10, 2024
Answer:
That’s a difficult question for me to answer, Ed. I’m not a lifelong Vanderbilt fan…I’d say at best, I’m “lifelong Vanderbilt-adjacent.” But, at least from my perspective, I wouldn’t call this the biggest upset in college football history by any stretch of the imagination. I mean, I know the struggles that this program has been through, but this is still an SEC program we’re talking about here. It’s nowhere near the magnitude of when App State went to Michigan as a 1-AA team and upset the Wolverines. So, I think it’s an outcome that should be remembered more locally than in the grand scheme of college football history.
I won’t pretend to be a historian, but I know the App State win, and Boise State’s upset of Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl are the two biggest that come to mind right away. But, locally…regionally…I think this is a game that should be remembered for a long, long time. For Alabama fans, this may end up being remembered as Kalen DeBoer’s version of the Louisiana-Monroe game that Nick Saban had. We could look up years from now and still hear Bama fans saying, “yeah, even DeBoer dropped that one to Vandy in his first season!”
More importantly, this is a game that Vanderbilt fans should treasure for the rest of their lives. Lane Kiffin said it best when he was busted in his postgame press conference paying attention to the Alabama-Vandy game instead of to the questions reporters were asking him…”this is a once in a lifetime kind of thing.” For this team to have the heart that it did to pull off something miraculous, man, that has to galvanize the fan base at least a little bit. This is a game that Nashville won’t soon forget.
