The Alabama offense was fun to watch this season. Kalen DeBoer went to the NFL and plucked Ryan Grubb away from the Seattle Seahawks so the two could run it back like their days running the Washington Huskies offense. The result? Well, we saw some really fun plays out of this unit, including this screen pass to left tackle Kadyn Proctor.
Every instinct in my bones was telling me Proctor was going to be blocking on a screen for Bernard here. Surely, they wouldn’t throw a pass to the tackle, right?!?! Nope – Proctor nearly scores on this!
As far as the execution goes, Proctor did a fantastic job of securing that catch. If you watch him running into the contact, he makes it a priority to secure the ball. Then, he stays on his feet and moves the pile for a few more yards. I’m not sure if there was something that the Georgia defense tipped to Ty Simpson and Alabama, and maybe they checked into this play, but it seemed like the perfect moment to catch the Georgia defense off guard. It looks like they were in man coverage, but they didn’t have a guy on Proctor.
This is a pretty creative philosophy. When you talk matchups, it’s usually like “how do we get this athletic tight end on the slow linebacker?” sort of thing. How about getting your big offensive tackle in space and asking DBs and linebackers to bring him down? It’s like asking a man to run out on the highway and stop the Ford F150 that’s heading right at him. Football can be a matchups game, and this play is a testament to Alabama’s ability to create the matchups they want.
I’m a bit of an offensive line enthusiast. This shit right here gets my blood pumping. This is what it’s all about, man!
