A few weeks ago, my wife and I planned a little overnight getaway to Cape May. We were up in New Jersey visiting family and she thought it would be nice for us to spend the night together as a way to celebrate her birthday (6/12), my birthday (6/29), and our anniversary (5/22). As a gift, her father made reservations for us at the restaurant at Peter Shields Inn, where we dined on the front porch during a glorious summer golden hour by the ocean. The lobster bisque was so impactful that I had to sit down and write this piece out immediately. It will eventually be published in a volume of Seasons, but which one, I’m not sure yet, and it definitely won’t be out for a while. So, I figured I’d share it with you guys now, and remind you that you can buy all of my books on Amazon.

The Lobster Bisque at Peter Shields Inn
What an evening to be dining,
Perched above the ground
On the porch of a fabled inn,
Facing the ocean,
Feeling its gentle breeze upon my face.
Smelling the fresh air.
A pianist strikes a key,
Then another and another.
The notes dance together
And in time,
They form a melody
Soothing like medicine
That warms the heart.
“My dear,” I said,
“Shall we indulge in the lobster bisque?”
Sitting within earshot
Of waves crashing upon the shore
And the screech of sea gulls
Fitting, as she saw it.
“When in Rome…”
Our first course arrived.
Four clumps of lobster in a bowl.
The server brought forth a tin pail
Within it rested liquid gold,
Thick, hearty, and warm
Something I would learn the value of
Soon enough.
She poured the concoction
And it filled the gaps between lobster
With a shade of orange
That reminded me of fall.
Viscous and slow
A reminder of the care with which
The bisque was prepared.
I opted for fresh cracked pepper
To give it some bite.
But, it needed nothing
For its flavor to stand out.
The first slurp off the spoon
It hits my lips like sunshine
And I can feel the tension in my bones relax.
Rich as velvet,
With depths like the ocean,
Smooth like gravy,
And a touch of the sea.
I watch from above,
As my soul departs my body,
Starry-eyed and satisfied.
