For Spooky Season’s episode this year, we wanted to do something a little bit different than the usual slasher, ghost story, or pure horror classic. I realized I had never seen a single entry to Alfred Hitchcock’s filmography, and while that may seem unforgivable to some, I’d say “hey – shit happens, man.” We were kicking around ideas and The Birds came up, which I thought would be the perfect departure from masks and monsters. So, here we are!
It is certainly a slow burn story that feels like a stark departure from the usual Spooky Season rotation. But, that’s precisely why I enjoyed it. It’s quiet – almost to the point where you could put this film on in the background and sleep to it….minus…y’know…the whole “birds screeching” thing. I like what The Birds has to say about our place in the world under the thumb of Mother Nature, and I can certainly appreciate the technology for its time. But, there are issues to discuss with this film as well. If you find yourself looking for something different to watch this October on a gray rainy afternoon, might I suggest The Birds, and once you’re done, come press play on this episode of Movie Review Rewind.
