Every now and then, our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, and myself dive into the career of a particular filmmaker on The Vick’s Flicks Podcast. Usually, it’s because they have a new film hitting theaters (or Netflix/home release in this day and age) or because they’re in the news for some reason, or hell – sometimes, just for no good reason. But, our filmmaker profiles are some of the most fun deep dives we take on this show. So, I’ve compiled a handy list of all the filmmakers we discussed this year on The Vick’s Flicks Podcast, just in case that sounds like something you’d be interested in.
Best of 2020: Filmmaker Profiles
Ep. 41: Peter Berg – link – When you think ‘filmmakers,’ Peter Berg’s name probably isn’t the first one to come to mind. But, if you look at the guy’s resumé, he’s put some really fun stuff out. Brandon and I got together to dish on his filmography back when Spenser Confidential dropped at the beginning of the year.
Ep. 48: Roland Emmerich – link – I honestly have no recollection of why we elected to talk about Roland Emmerich back at the end of May. I mean, I’m sure we mention it in the episode, and I could totally just listen to it again, but ain’t no EIC got time for that. Just enjoy us breaking down the career of the man who brought us Independence Day, The Patriot, and most importantly, Universal Soldier.
Ep. 50: Judd Apatow – link – Apatow has one of the most interesting filmographies out there – known for comedies such as The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, Apatow added to this filmography earlier this year when The King of Staten Island dropped on home release. That gave us the excuse we needed to talk about one of my personal favorite filmmakers.
Ep. 59: Christopher Nolan – link – When it comes to ‘the brand,’ Nolan has reached the elite echelon of filmmakers that can get asses in seats just by casual moviegoers seeing ‘a film by ____’ in the trailer. He’s one of the greatest of his generation, and we dove into what makes his brand so great back when Tenet dropped at the end of the summer.
