Remember about a decade ago when the prospects of realignment rumbled throughout college football? We anxiously awaited sports talk each and every day wondering how the dominos would fall. That shit was exciting! Like…y’all had me hanging on your every word just wondering where Maryland and Rutgers would end up! Do you know how hard it is to get people to care about Maryland and Rutgers? Well, if you were hyped about that, you’re going to be hyped about the big news of yesterday – thanks to a report from The Houston Chronicle, we’ve now learned that officials from the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns have contacted the SEC about joining the league. YEAH!

Could another wave of realignment be in the cards? That may be the case, according to a report by The Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman. The report states that Texas and Oklahoma both reached out to the Southeastern Conference about joining the 14-team league, largely regarded as college football’s best conference.
Now, it would take 11 of the 14 SEC members to vote in favor of Oklahoma and Texas joining. So, this is far from a lock to happen. But, the fact that it’s even being discussed right now is exciting. I, for one, am all on board with the idea. I think having four “super conferences” is the way to go to rightfully crown a National Champion…think about it. Four 16-team conferences, two 8-team divisions in each. Have the division champs play each other in each conference championship and then boom – you’ve got your playoffs. It just makes sense, and expanding to larger conferences allows for some of the mid-major ‘Group of Five’ teams to sneak their way into a bigger league and play it all out on the field. I love it! What could possibly go wrong? That’s why I don’t understand the resistance to this.
I mean, I get why Texas A&M is against it considering how much pride they take in being the only team in Texas in the SEC. You can pretty much count them as a lock to vote against this. I get why the Big 12 is against this because holy shit would they be in trouble if Texas and Oklahoma left or what? But, the fans? I don’t get it. What is this hurting? College football is weird because it’s one of those sports that people are oddly territorial over. No one wants anything to change – part of what makes college football great is the tradition, I’ll give you that.
But, expanding the playoffs and super conferences aren’t going to change those things that make us feel apart of a larger community and enjoy Saturdays more. The regular season would still mean a lot because you’d have seven opponents within your division and Just give us the best teams playing each other week in and week out. It’s that simple.
