Some of you might already know this about me, but I’ll share it for the rest of the room. I could probably count the number of movies I’ve seen that were made before the year 2001 on both hands. No real reason for it – I just wasn’t a big movie kid growing up. I didn’t really start watching movies until I was in high school and we started going to the mall every Friday night. For some reason, there’s a contingent of the SoBros Network team and fan base that really want me to watch some of the classics of yesteryear. So, I figured I’d do that and document the experiences of seeing some of these classics for the first time in the year 2021. Today, we’re watching the original Halloween from 1978. These are my notes.
Stoney Sees: Halloween (1978)
I’ve seen bits and pieces of about 15 different Halloween movies. I loved Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007), and I loved the 2018 version. I’ve yet to see Halloween Kills, but I plan to watch it before Spooky Season 2021 concludes. It’s one of those things that’s always in my periphery this time of year, but when I stopped and thought about it, I couldn’t remember a single time that I just sat down, paid attention for the duration of the movie, and really bought in.
On a rare Saturday that didn’t involve plans for work or my social life, the ol’ ball and chain and I decided to have ourselves a spooky little night. The air was crisp and cool, so we opened up the windows, cooked up some tacos (tacos aren’t inherently spooky…I’m just letting you guys know what we had for dinner…), made pumpkin spiced hot chocolate, and settled in for a night of Spooky Season movies. Up first, 1978’s Halloween – the original…old school…the story that started it all. Like I said, I had seen bits and pieces off and on over the course of the last 35 years, but my fiancé was completely new to it. Let’s dive in.
Notes
*Oh, they’re cuttin’ the tiddies out of the AMC version, huh? Bummer.
*I know folks in horror movies aren’t exactly known for making good decisions, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that pulling up on a mental health facility and seeing a busted fence and inmates roaming the fields and deciding to get out of the car to figure out what’s going on is probably not a good decision to make. Now, you got your damn car jacked, it’s raining, and there’s a serial killer on the loose. Look what you’ve done.
*I’m kind of concerned by how brazen Michael Myers is just creeping on people. You can tell this is the old days because people just look the other way, or tell Big Mike to fuck off. Nowadays, Halloween would be real boring because this guy would get the cops called on him right away for standing outside a school in a William Shatner mask and then boom – that’s it. Movie’s over.
*I forgot that you cannot tell someone’s a doctor if they’re not wearing their lab coat at all times.
*I’m really digging the lighting of this movie. Everything feels very “harvest moon” – I don’t even know what that means but you get it.
*What kind of fucking cop just listens to a man who strolls into town saying he’s a doctor and there’s a dangerous man on the loose and decides to just stop what he’s doing and hang out with this guy all night?!?!
*Okay, this kid’s obsession with the boogeyman is getting a little concerning. Imagine seeing that big bastard roaming around your neighbors house and ever trying to sleep again.
*If I was in this situation, I would simply not open any doors, ever.
*That motherfucker took a hell of a back bump. Definitely like AJ Styles eating a chokeslam off the roof of that barn during the Boneyard Match.
*He’s just….gone????!?!!?!? That’s the end of the movie?!?! Wild.
All in all, this is probably my favorite movie I’ve reviewed yet for Stoney Sees. It’s no wonder this has become THE quintessential Spooky Season movie. My star rating: 9.26/10.
