CFB Roundup: Oklahoma Has to Be the Fakest 8-0 We’ve Ever Seen

The Oklahoma Sooners have benched their starting quarterback and struggled in almost every game this season, including Saturday's win over 1-5 Kansas. How is this team #3 in the rankings?

Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.

*The 2021 Oklahoma Sooners continue to be one of the most perplexing college football teams I’ve ever watched. Just about every game they’ve played in has been a struggle, and yet, they keep winning these games. Saturday was no different, as the Sooners struggled to put away the lowly 1-5 Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks were in control for the most of the game before the Sooners woke up. But, this is a team that still hasn’t looked particularly good against a quality opponent for four quarters. They benched their quarterback, who was the presumptive favorite to be taken #1 overall in the NFL Draft next spring, and are playing down to bad football teams. It just hasn’t been easy.

Part of me wants to say, “y’all can put this team in the playoff if y’all want, but it’s on y’all when they get routed by Cincinnati or Alabama,” but hell, they’d probably get in and win the whole damn thing the way this season is going. Maybe it’s just a team of destiny.

*We’ve said on the show ever since the Cincinnati Bearcats pulled off the win vs Notre Dame that the Bearcats are going to need Notre Dame and SMU to keep winning, and they’re going to need to start laying it in on teams to get the style points. That wasn’t the case on Saturday, as the Bearcats struggled to fend off a game Navy Midshipmen team 27-20. Luke Fickell called back to their previous struggles against Navy before the game, and it’s obvious that that system just gives Cincinnati fits. I’d say there’s no reason for concern until we start seeing this Cincinnati playing flat week in and week out. They’ve still got the opportunity to score major style points in November and December.

*The Third Saturday in October absolutely lived up to the legendary status of the rivalry. The depth of the Alabama Crimson Tide just proved to be too much for the Tennessee Volunteers, as the Tide pulled away late. But, man – props to Josh Heupel for what he’s been able to do in such a short amount of time in Knoxville. The Vols were absolutely game for this match-up. They made it competitive early on. Hendon Hooker was dealing. They just ran out of gas against this talented and deep Tide roster. If Heupel keeps them on this trajectory, this is going to be a contender in a couple of years or so.

*The Iowa State Cyclones were probably a little undervalued going into Saturday’s game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. I think because of the two losses, people were sleeping on just how talented and experienced this team is. Not to mention, the crowd did a fantastic job of turning Ames into a frenzy. It was a hostile environment, and ultimately, the Cowboys weren’t able to get it done on offense. Shout out to Tay Martin for this one, though:

*Man, the Oregon Ducks keep the Pac-12’s playoff hopes hanging on by a thread. Oregon bowed up and got their run game back on track after the UCLA Bruins jumped up to a 14-0 lead. They started to run away with it before UCLA made it interesting again. Ultimately, Dorian Thompson-Robinson was hurt, and the backup came in and threw an interception when UCLA was driving, and that was the difference in the game. The Ducks were inconsistent throughout this one, but managed to survive. They’re the only ranked team in the Pac-12 right now, and there’s no margin or error for this team. They have to keep winning.

*Good for Syracuse!

*Props to the UTSA Roadrunners for getting to a surprising 8-0. They still have big games @ UTEP and hosting UAB, but we’ve got to give them their flowers for this amazing start with some quality wins on their schedule.

*We got another A+ nugget of wisdom from Mike Leach, even though he did take shots at the greatest Halloween candy of all time, candy corn:

*After they benched their preseason Heisman contending quarterback, and dropped a third game on the season, I’m saying the Clemson Tigers are officially cooked. 2021 is going to be a lost season for this program, and I think the questions about Dabo Swinney are going to start to creep in – was he really the good coach we thought he was? Or, was he the beneficiary of having Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence at quarterback? I’m not calling it either way after a half a season. But, I’m just illustrating that we’re going to start hearing those questions a little more loudly. Shout out to the Pittsburgh Panthers, though – they have a Heisman-worthy quarterback of their own in Kenny Pickett, and this offense is ROLLING.

*Is the entire MAC West going to get to a bowl game?

*Eliminated from the CFP race this week: Well….unfortunately for the Penn State Nittany Lions, they weren’t going to survive a second loss anyway, and they still had some tough contests on their schedule. Hey, if it’s any consolation, at least they can say they competed in the longest game in college football history, even if it did end in a loss to Illinois. Now, they get the chance to play spoiler for a red hot Ohio State team. The NC State Wolfpack was a long shot anyway, but now it’s officially over for ’em after losing to a mediocre-at-best Miami team.

*Conference championship match-ups based on current standings (I just think these are funny and/or interesting to lookout throughout the season, so figured I’d share ’em with y’all):

  • AAC: Houston vs. Cincinnati
  • ACC: Wake Forest vs. Pitt
  • Big 12: Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
  • Big Ten: Michigan vs. Iowa
  • C-USA: Florida Atlantic vs. UTSA
  • MAC: Kent State vs. Northern Illinois
  • MWC: Utah State vs. San Diego State
  • Pac-12: Oregon State vs. Utah
  • SEC: Georgia vs. Alabama
  • Sun Belt: Appalachian State vs. Louisiana

*Personally, my top college football top 10 would look like this:

  1. Georgia
  2. Cincinnati
  3. Alabama
  4. Ohio State
  5. Michigan
  6. Michigan State
  7. Ole Miss
  8. Oregon
  9. Oklahoma
  10. Notre Dame
