CFB Roundup: This Georgia Defense Is Historic

Can we just give the Heisman Trophy to the entire Georgia defense?

Let’s dive into the week that was in college football and hit all the highlights on the SoBros Network’s College Football Roundup.

*I’ve been on the ‘Florida is not that good’ train since before the season even started. So, context is important for me to say this isn’t just a reaction to Saturday’s game when I say that this Georgia Bulldogs defense is something historic. It’s been all season long, and this Florida game is just the latest set of data we have to look at. Gene Chizik, on the halftime show of MS State-Kentucky, said it’s the defensive equivalent of what LSU’s offense was in 2019, and I think that comparison is dead on. They have allowed 53 points all season. That’s 6.6 points per game. No one has scored more than 13 on them – South Carolina and Kentucky both did that. Florida scored seven, but that came late in the game, and could’ve very well been Georgia’s third doughnut of the year. They just swarm to the ball. They are chaos. They are a brick wall. I honestly don’t know how anyone’s going to beat this team, especially the way they played complementary football on Saturday, running the ball efficiently and taking their shots in the passing game when they felt it necessary. Stetson Bennett had a breathtaking deep touchdown pass in this one. I mean, this Bulldogs team checks all the boxes – they look historic, and they look downright unstoppable.

*I think it’s safe to say that quarterback Caleb Williams just may have saved the College Football Playoff for the Oklahoma Sooners. I mean…yeah…it’s not like Texas Tech is a playoff contender, but they’re a halfway decent team, and Williams just outright smoked ’em for six touchdowns. This team seems to have found its sea legs after benching Spencer Rattler and barely surviving the bulk of their games this season by one possession. If they get right, watch out. This Big 12 race is going to be hella fun to watch.

*If you listened to last week’s show, you already know that Steven and I both felt kinda funny about this huge spread on the Ohio State-Penn State game. I just didn’t think Penn State would go quietly into the night, and they didn’t. They came pretty close to effectively ending the Buckeyes CFP chances. Now, Michigan has a loss, and Michigan State is the lone unbeaten in the Big Ten. We said these teams would start cannibalizing each other and now they are. How the Big Ten East shakes down is going to have a huge impact on the CFP race.

*How about that wild SMU-Houston game? It was ever bit the shootout we thought it would be – tied at 37 with 30 seconds, it looked like this one was destined for overtime when Houston SHOCKED the Mustangs:

Not good for SMU bettors, but a damn good game for college football fans.

*Dan Mullen is starting to come under fire at 4-4 – talking about “squeeze the rope when it’s burning” and whatnot. I don’t think there’s any way the Gators will move on from Mullen after this season. I don’t care how disappointing 4-4 is, this was a transition year from the get go and I don’t see how Gators fans could think otherwise. Not to mention, EVERYONE has been getting wrecked by Georgia this season. This man is still a damn good coach capable of getting that program to a National Championship. Chill.

*The Wake Forest Demon Deacons absolutely lit up the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, and while yes…it’s Duke….this Wake Forest team is a Ferrari on offense. It’s the first time the team is 8-0 in program history, and quarterback Sam Hartman should be getting a little more Heisman love than he is.

*If you stayed up late to watch the BYU Cougars take on the Virginia Cavaliers, you were treated to an absolute fireworks show. That game was total bonkers. BYU jumped up early, but Virginia came back and took the lead late before BYU eventually pulled away. I thought it could’ve been a sneaky good game when we talked about ‘national games of interest’ on last week’s podcast, but I didn’t think we’d get THAT kind of electric factory.

*Eliminated from the CFP race this week: Man, just a couple of weeks ago, I went on the pod and said that the Iowa Hawkeyes still had a comfortable path to the CFP, but that’s effectively over after being outscored 51-14 in consecutive losses, their season is done. They’re officially out, and they’ve dropped to FOURTH in the Big Ten West (Minnesota would represent the division in the B10 Championship if the season ended today). I said there was still a shot that the Ole Miss Rebels and Kentucky Wildcats could still get in if they ran the table and got some help – both teams lost their second game of the season on Saturday, so they’re cooked too. Finally, the Pittsburgh Panthers…just when they were starting to get a little respect, they had the rug pulled out from underneath ’em by Miami.

*Conference championship match-ups based on current standings (I just think these are funny and/or interesting to lookout throughout the season, so figured I’d share ’em with y’all):

  • ACC: Wake Forest vs. Pitt
  • Big 12: Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
  • Big Ten: Michigan State vs. Minnesota
  • C-USA: Florida Atlantic vs. UTSA
  • MAC: Kent State vs. Northern Illinois
  • MWC: Utah State vs. Fresno State
  • Pac-12: Oregon vs. Utah
  • SEC: Georgia vs. Alabama
  • Sun Belt: Appalachian State vs. Louisiana

*Personally, my top college football top 10 would look like this:

  1. Georgia
  2. Alabama
  3. Cincinnati
  4. Ohio State
  5. Michigan State
  6. Oregon
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Notre Dame
  9. Wake Forest
  10. Texas A&M
