I don’t know if it’s because Backrooms has been cleaning it up at the theaters and has become a social media phenomenon or what, but I’ve found myself really hunting liminal spaces in the wild lately. Aura and I had a rare Saturday to do nothing with a few weeks ago, so we decided to see if Old Time Pottery was still open in Madison (since the one in Murfreesboro had closed). Turns out, it is still open, though it’s not nearly as fun a trip as it used to be. We found it to be a lot more ‘overstock’ than ‘seasonal decor’ like it used to be. Nonetheless, now that I’m 40 years old (basically) and in general poor health, I have to piss all the time. So, as Aura was walking down the towel aisle, I said, “hey watch the buggy – I need to go take a leak.” That’s when I discovered this restroom that is laid out in the most random way.
This thing was a total mindfuck. I mean, what is going on here? This is like two bathrooms in one. Maybe they knocked down a wall and expanded it? I don’t know! You put a toilet and a stall next to the sink…but then there’s a whole ‘nother “room” in this thing with a urinal and another toilet and a stall next to it. But, if you turn around there, you see another urinal!??! Like, they thought “shit – we need another urinal” and picked the first place where they could find space for it. The changing table is right in front of the door. Have fun opening that door and walking right into that. I just don’t get it. I’m not here to knock anyone, of course, but there is a part of me that wonders just what the hell the blueprints for this place looked like. I knew I had to do some live journalism and share this with the world.
