The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they have severed ties with Dorial Green-Beckham. This isn’t exactly breaking news…it’s a week old, I’m aware. But, hey – we’ve been on vacation. That’s rare for this team. And, maybe just maybe, in all the holiday buzz, this wittle story slipped through the cracks. I just wanted to chime in with my two cents.
The Philadelphia Eagles announced Friday they have released Dorial Green-Beckham, the wide receiver they traded for last August. He had been a second-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2014.
Green-Beckham had just 36 catches for 392 yards last season for the Eagles.
The Eagles added four wide receivers in the offseason – including Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor, the team’s first-round pick in 2015, are also on the roster.
In 2013, Green-Beckham was kicked off the team while in college at Missouri because of a domestic violence charge and two drug arrests. He sat out the next season at Oklahoma under NCAA transfer rules, then decided to enter the NFL draft.
Green-Beckham had a promising rookie season, with 32 catches for 569 yards and 4 TDs.
I’ve never felt like such an ass in my four years of sports writing. Did you guys like how I made it sound like I’m some veteran, career football writer there, too? Anyway, I was on the DGB hype train from Day 1. Which, I guess bringing that back up isn’t a good thing to do. I’m not helping my credibility here at all. But, I still think it’s funny.
I genuinely laughed when I read this. Like, out-loud, deep belly laugh laughed. And, by now, you guys know I’m hardly a credible source of football knowledge. I’m just a dude telling jokes and throwing my football picks out there in the public forum. I know enough about football to make educated guesses, but I’m not going to break down a playbook any time soon.
That said, Green-Beckham had all the physical tools to become a true elite number one wide receiver in the NFL. I have this intrinsic disposition to believe every person who falls upon hard times is going to turn things around. So, in DGB’s case, I just kept saying, “this guy has too much talent to peter out of the NFL.” I even wrote last season that he’d have his breakout year and lead the Titans in receiving yards.
But, the hard reality is that some people just don’t or can’t turn it around. Green-Beckham has been a huge disappointment. I more or less stuck to my guns to convince myself that I was not an idiot. But, here we are…and alas, I am an idiot.
Don’t worry, though – I’m always the type of guy who will turn a negative into a positive, so I have thought of a few places DGB can go to find work: Home Depot, Taco Bell, the WWE (seriously, if DeAngelo Williams can get a gig wrestling for Impact Wrestling, no reason DGB can’t show up on Monday Night Raw), and Chuck E. Cheese’s.
Finally, in conclusion, now that I’ve officially stated that he’s done, cooked, and finished, he’ll probably sign with the Patriots, post 2,000 yards, and be named MVP of the Super Bowl next year.
