When you have close to a hundred muscle-bound, egotistical athletes touring the country together, things are going to happen. I can’t imagine how grumpy I would be if I was constantly on the road, constantly around the same people, and constantly throwing my body at the ground in front of thousands of people.
Fights are inevitable – simply bound to happen. I, for one, have never been able to turn away from an awesome fight story between wrestlers. But, this one comes way out of left field…
Courtesy of WrestlingNews.co – Dave Meltzer posted a quick update on the backstage fight between Simon Gotch and Sin Cara. For those that missed our earlier post, the fight took place at catering prior to Smackdown on 7/19.
The fight was said to be a quick one-sided destruction in favor of Sin Cara. There are still no details yet on what started the fight.
Sin Cara has a reputation for being a legitimate tough guy and this would not be the first time that he has been involved in a backstage fight. In 2014, Konnan told a story on his podcast about an altercation Sin Cara had with Sheamus near the trainer’s table. Konnan said that Sin Cara was lying on the bed and Sheamus walked by and made a remark to Sin Cara saying that he was more important than him. Sin Cara took offense to Sheamus telling him to get off the table because he needed to be attended to. “He said when he got called out, he said he thought Hunico was playing,” Konnan said. “He said that out loud, and I’m thinking to myself, then why did he throw the first punch?” Konnan said that Sheamus threw the first punch but had his legs swept by Sin Cara. Sin Cara then proceeded to hit him with punches.
Konnan said that Sheamus tried to “cover it up like it was nothing.” As of now, there is no indication from WWE that disciplinary action will be taken against Sin Cara and Simon Gotch.
So many questions here, Dave. You can’t just drop this information all at once like it’s nothing and then bolt. Is that how you get people to sign up for the newsletter?!?!
First, it seems like every wrestling fight starts in catering. What in the blue hell makes CATERING such a volatile place!? You would think that would be the happiest place for athletes on the go. You get your meatloaf and taters, and you go chum it up with the boys! Which brings me to my next question…
What triggered the fight? It’s a huge mystery – maybe the biggest mystery to come out of the WWE since G-TV. Gotch seems like a nice guy! I can’t imagine him going around, chest puffed out, stealing peoples’ Go-gurt and knocking cafeteria trays out of their hands. Someone probably said something, things escalated, and men were called out.
We all know what happens when a man is called out – it’s either put up or shut up. It doesn’t matter if it’s Joe Schmo or the Mongol Empire. Someone calls you out, you can’t stand for that. You take them on.
But another question….how did Sin Cara end up with this reputation as a rough-and-tumble tough guy!? It’s Sin Cara! He looks like he popped out of a child’s cartoon! I mean, don’t get me wrong – that’s just the WWE in the PG Era…but you could’ve given me a dozen guesses, and I would not have guessed him as one of the WWE’s toughest men. Good for him, though.
I love that Sheamus tried to cover up his encounter with Sin Cara. No shit, you get your LEGS SWEPT OUT FROM UNDER YOU and the guy proceeds to land multiple punches. I’m not telling anyone about that ever. That goes to my grave….unless of course Konnan finds out.
This idea that “you don’t mess with Sin Cara” is so comical. Of all the people in the locker room, it’s Sin Cara! SIN CARA! That’s amazing. What a champion of men.
Bigger picture here, though: how does one end up with the tough guy reputation without beating people up? This is one of just two incidents I’ve read about Sin Cara. So, how else does he get such a reputation? Mean mugging? Trash talking? I don’t know – I figure you get the reputation you earn, so being a tough guy would mean beating people up in my book. If they’re going around beating people up, why do they still have a job?
I don’t get “tough guys” anyway.
They need to bring the Undertaker back full time if for nothing more than Wrestler’s Court. Gotch and Sin Cara need to stand trial for this catering snafu.
Regardless of what actually happened or happens in the future, I’m still #TeamSimon – my boy has more natural wrestling talent in his pinky than both of the Sin Cara incarnates put together. I could not care less about Sin Cara in 2016 – no offense, please don’t hunt me down and beat me up in my kitchen, Mr. Cara. But yeah, no offense, but the gimmick’s stale as ever – it was only relevant again because Kalisto is killing it and the Lucha Dragons were a pretty fun tag team.
Maybe it’s like the story of Haku, who kept his job because Eric Bischoff was literally afraid of firing him. I don’t know…maybe Vince McMahon is afraid of Sin Cara. We may never know.
