A Downer’s Guide to Holiday Tunes

The holidays can be filled with so much positivity and cheerful memories, but for some folks that’s not always the case.  Sometimes, the traditional Christmas songs just don’t fit in with the cold, rainy days that December brings.  The pleasant experiences that many are blessed to encounter each winter don’t always happen for everyone, and some people just can’t get into a Jingle-Bell mood 100% of the time….myself included.

In fact, it’ll be three years this Christmas since my best friend Riden took off with his favorite dancer from the Midnight Express.  Wearing nothing but short denim shorts and his classic leather vest, they boarded his scooter and rode off into the cold, December night.  And you’d better believe I’ll be sitting on the front porch this Christmas Eve with a carton of Kools, waiting for his return…just like every year.

But until he comes home, I’ll be jammin’ to these Christmas tunes with a case of the blues:

“The Last Christmas”- Emery:  This soft and simple song gives us a quick plea for fixing a troublesome relationship.

“I’ll Be Stoned for Christmas” – Dent May:   Providing us with an upbeat tempo, Dent May sings about what really happens when we all go home for the Holidays….

“Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis”- Tom Waits:  The talented Mr. Waits provided us with this gem way back in ’78.  Sit back and enjoy this sad story sung through his raspy, yet beautiful voice.

“Christmas(Baby Please Come Home)” – Dustin Kensrue:  That’s right, the beloved Thrice lead-singer is here to put his unique twist on this holiday classic.  Enjoy!

“Blue Christmas” – Dustin Kensrue:  Two Dustin Kensrue songs in a row.  I don’t care.  I like his Christmas album and it fits the topic.  Deal with it and enjoy.

“Blue and Cold”- Versus the World:  A song about love and loss, this one doesn’t have so much to do with the “Holidays”, but more so just gives us an image of winter…and the “Holidays” are in winter…so yeah, in case you didn’t know.

“Christmassacre” – From First to Last:  For all you former screamo kids-now-turned-adults, here’s your chance to two-step your way into the Christmas tree….it’ll be so xhardcorex.  Also, for some reason they provide you with Pete Wentz’s phone number.  Don’t ask me why.

“Christmas TV” – Slow Club:  One of my personal favorites, this clean duet is a good way to shine some holiday hope for anyone going through rough times this winter.  Keep your head up, and get ready to switch gears for the party-time Christmas tunes to come!
