Dion Jordan to the Seahawks Is an Interesting Move

Okay, let me set this up first. I was just chatting with my bros over the weekend about Richard Sherman being on the trading block and how he would fit in with the Tennessee Titans (we’re a Nashville-based blog so it makes sense). It alleviates their biggest need on defense, but the price the Seattle Seahawks are asking is a bit steep. They want a first round pick and a player in return.

If the Seahawks want to restore the defense to what it was when they were winning NFC Championships, they need to get back to rushing the passer. Considering Derrick Morgan was rumored to have been offered to New Orleans as a part of a package for Brandin Cooks, I figured it would take one of the firsts and at least Morgan for the Titans to put Sherman in two-tone blue.

Now, this is all based on nothing more than a web of rumors and none of it could be true. But, for the sake of chatting around the water cooler, let’s hit this.

Besides, don’t act like this is any worse than the shit you read on Titans Facebook.

Credit to ESPN:

Former No. 3 overall pick Dion Jordan has agreed to a contract with the Seattle Seahawks, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

The Miami Dolphins waived Jordan on March 31 after he failed a physical. The move saved Miami $3.225 million in salary for 2017.

Jordan projects as a strongside linebacker in the Seahawks’ base defense and a defensive end in their sub packages. It would be a role similar to the one that Bruce Irvin filled for Seattle before signing with the Oakland Raiders in free agency last year. Mike Morgan, last season’s starting strongside linebacker for the Seahawks, is an unrestricted free agent.

USA Today Sports first reported Jordan’s agreement with the Seahawks.

Obviously, it is a complete pipe dream to think this alleviates any sort of need for Seattle right away. But, the key here is the ‘Bruce Irvin’ role for Seattle – if Jordan can come up with any sort of semblance of what Irvin did as a Seahawk, this will be a successful move.

This is the exact role the Seahawks have been missing. And, it’s an illustration of my point that they need pass rushers.

In 2013, Miami made a trade and moved up from No. 12 to No. 3 to draft Jordan. He had just three sacks in 2013 and 2014 and has had multiple suspensions for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He didn’t play in a game in 2015 or 2016.

The Dolphins kept Jordan under contract the past two years because of his potential. He was eligible to return from suspension in 2016 but arrived at training camp with a knee injury the team was unaware of. Jordan never showed Miami’s coaching staff enough last season to get on the active roster.

Yeah, there’s no other way to put it: Jordan has been a colossal bust. Substance abuse, mysterious injuries, and you traded up nine spots….to third overall, mind you….to grab this guy. It’s hard to imagine getting much less out of a first round draft pick.

But, now – let’s say the Seahawks are able to milk some productivity out of Jordan. Wouldn’t that be a huge feather in Pete Carroll’s hat? Does this change the dynamic of the Sherman trade rumors at all? No – no way. This is a complete we-have-nothing-to-lose pick up.

It’s not only interesting from that warped Titans fan perspective that I set up earlier. It’s just a fascinating move. These are the types of the transitions when players either wake up and realize their potential, or they just stumble further down the rabbit hole of football purgatory.

Let’s hope for the young man to turn it around.
