I once attempted to read the NCAA rule book, and quickly decided that it was a waste of my time…especially considering there’s no place for reliable information on this web site. Still, my point is that those people covered everything when writing that damn thing. It makes it hard to believe that a scenario can pop up that hasn’t been thought of, but yesterday, such a situation popped up:
Have you ever seen this? Texas Lutheran’s Tyler Hopkins has FG blocked only to kick again off bounce for 18-yard FG! #sctop10 #D3fb pic.twitter.com/bqWI2pfLWn

I love the referees just looking around like, “WTF?! What do we do here, Dave? Can we just let them do shit like that?” Totally lost, and I can’t say that I blame them. I would have no idea how to proceed. Probably would’ve just counted it, like, “damn, that was impressive. I’m not taking the three points away from that kid.”
Well, the refs called it good and it went into the box score as good.
But, I don’t know – SB Nation went to the rulebook, and determined that the rulebook does not explicitly state that such a move is illegal, but probably isn’t legal, considering the ball was loose, and teams can only catch or recover a loose ball to advance it. Got it?
Anyway, my question is: should it count?
On one hand, kinda seems like it should be wildly illegal. I mean, players can’t just go around kicking balls all over the field. Players can’t kick balls off the field without getting hit with a delay of game penalty, after all. But, on the other, man – that’s such a slick athletic move. Don’t you have to give the kid credit for pulling off such a difficult move?
On the third hand, this is too much like soccer, and American football is in enough danger of decreasing popularity. If it’s too much like soccer, I’m afraid red-blooded Americans will keep turning off the television.
How about we just let this one slide and see if this happens again?
